I feel your pain bro. I only need two things to get my MGB back on the road,
time and money.

A friend has a frogeye that has been garaged, and not running, for about 45
years, I so much would have loved to pick that up as a project and put in a
more modern driveline.

Re: PESO: 1946 Power Wagon

2024-09-04 Thread Bill
I spent some time chatting with the lad in the background of the
picture. He and his dad had salvaged the machine from a farmyard and had
taken it on. He indicated that this was the first 4 wheel drive truck
introduced to the civilian market. I don't know if that's the fact, but
he seemed pretty sure of himself.

He is VERY proud of his truck.

This one is powered by the original 218CID inline 6 that it came from
the factory with. When they did the restoration they used bed liner
spray on the running boards rather than the original gloss black enamel.
I think that was the only unforced "improvement" they made. I don't
think the tires were stock, but I suspect that after nearly 80 years,
the stock tires are no longer readily available so they did the best
they could.

Thanks all for looking and commenting.

PESO 2024 - 169 - GDG

2024-08-19 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
My Leica M4-2 has been sitting unused for some time as I play with its 1946
predecessor. So I figured it was time to load it and go for a walk or two...

Window, Wall, Reflection - Santa Clara 2024 :: https://flic.kr/p/2qaVTtq
Leica M4-2 + SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special
Ferrania P33 @ EI160
processed in HC-110 @ 1:49, 68°, 9 minutes

I've adopted using the SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special as my standard lens on
this camera. To me, it's one of the very best lenses Pentax ever made; I loved
it on my Pentax DSLRs in the FA43/1.9 form. The Special version is packaged in
an all manual focus Leica L39 thread mount with full rangefinder coupling, and
originally came with a 43mm auxiliary finder. I found one in beautiful
condition, sans box or dedicated viewfinder. I fit it with an LTM to M-mount
adapter that brings up the 35mm frame lines by default. That's close enough to
the 43mm FoV that I've never felt the need to find and fit the dedicated
viewfinder. It has a great feel and has all the super imaging qualities of this
Pentax 43mm Limited lens.

I'm also learning/playing with a new film from the Italian company Ferrania ...
P33 B&W negative. It's a faster version of their outstanding P30 emulsion, EI
160, and is less contrasty/less difficult to expose correctly. Very nice stuff,
but in somewhat short supply as yet. I have one more roll of it, and am already
doing pre-orders for another half-a-dozen rolls.

More as I get to them..! :D

I used the Color-Skopar 50 on most of this roll, then switched to the

On my bicycle ride to Mountain View, I cross California Hwy 85 via a pedestrian
bridge. I stopped for a moment to catch the highway traffic below, but found
this view of the path/roadway to be more intriguing.

  Rounding The Bend - Mountain View 2024 :: https://flic.kr/p/2q8H9bL
  Leica IIIc + Elmar 5.0cm f/3.5
  Ilford Delta 400

The photo proved a trickier-than-usual exposure to render due to the bright sun
on one side and the dark shade on the other, as well as the reflectivity of the
concrete. I'm curious to try a similar photo again the next time I ride over
the bridge with the M10 Monochrom, just to see how the monochrome digital
sensor handles it compared to this relatively fast film.

PESO 2024 - 163 - GDG

2024-08-05 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Continuing through photos made with the second roll of film I shot using the
Leica IIIc body... I was testing different lenses on the camera with this roll.
This photo is made with the SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special:

Ladies At Lunch - Santa Clara 2024 :: https://flic.kr/p/2q8p8g2
Leica IIIc + SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special
Fujifilm ACROS 100

Regards the lens testing: by and large, all of the lenses I've tried perform
well. The 43 feels a little bulky on the IIIc body; I feel best fitting the
IIIc with Color-Skopar 28/3.5 and 50/2.5 lenses, as well as a period-correct
Leica Elmar 5.0cm f/3.5 collapsible, of the lenses I have on hand. One of the
Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35/2.5 lenses might be nice too, and they're not
terribly expensive on the used market.

enjoy! G

Re: PESO Fallingwater

Thanks, Rick!

If I'm following you, the lower left is a section of the Berlin Wall.
The circular structure is a sculpture titled "Room" by Andy
Goldsworthy. Kentuck Knob is owned by Lord Peter Palumbo, who
apparently collects art, much of which is displayed there. This was
the explanation for not allowing photography inside the house. The
sculptures on the grounds had no such restrictions.

I have had great difficulty shooting birds in flight & aerobatics

only about 10% savers.

A chap in Johannesburg produced some very good aerobatic shots with a

I have had great difficulty shooting birds in flight & aerobatics with

about 10% savers.

A chap in Johannesburg produced some very good aerobatic shots with a
K3ii & PLM. As you say, the K3iii would probably be even better.

Re: PESO: emperor dragonflies

2024-07-07 Thread Henk Terhell

Alan, that review confirms my experience with this lens about AF-S and AF-C.
The body is the limiting factor in AF. However this review is from 2017
so they haven't tested it on the K-3 III.
I bought the K-70 a few years ago to fit the 55-300 PLM (it won't
combine with my K-5) and for me this is a pleasant light weight combo to
walk around in nature.

For birding you often need a longer lens which I don't have.
Only if it gets stuck I would switch to a mirrorless system like the
Fujifilm XT-5.

The PLM is a fast and silent lens, however all Pentax bodies (perhaps
except the K-3 III) are weak in AF.
I'm shooting dragonflies in flight in AF-S with single point, because
AF-C is unusable.

Would be nice to work with fast AF of one of the mirrorless systems.

Very nice photo! I think it is better in B&W than it would be in color.

PESO Family snapshot

2024-06-28 Thread Toine
I don't post photos that often, mainly because my Pentax gear is collecting
dust (on the outside).
Maybe this one because it was fun shooting:

Shot from a birdwatch cabin which was a kind of reversed fish tank
allowing me to shoot at water level.

Leaves - Santa Clara 2024 :: https://flic.kr/p/2pZSZ5i
Minox C, APX100
Scanned with Leica M10 Monochrom + Summicron-R 50mm f/2 on bellows

The Minox C is a lovely camera to shoot with, albeit ISO 100 film ends up being
a bit grainy and soft for this format; APX25 film returns much more detailed
images. :)

Thanks Ann!

It was warm and sunny here today (about 80-82° at peak) but dry as a bone and a
bit windy, so I didn't feel it at all on my walk. I didn't carry a camera ...
spent the walk listening to another book on physics and cosmology by Carlo

Re: PESO: Spoonbill Silhouette

2024-06-16 Thread Alan C
We have visited the Kruger Park many times in the last few months all
characterised by poor sightings. A Ranger friend tells me that even the
international visitors have been complaining. The  animals can't have
just disappeared. I think the very high rainfall we have had the last 3
years (ceasing abruptly in March because of El Nino) is the reason. The
bush, especially the scrub Mopane, is still very dense and the isolated
water pans have not yet dried up. Good for the prey, tough for the
predators. Things will return to normal in the next few months before
the annual rains begin. The leaves will fall & the animals will be
forced to return to the permanent water. By September it should again be
possible to see the Big 5 in a single day. As for the insects, this is a
global problem caused by the insecticides in use today.

The two are not mutually exclusive. To be honest the K-3III is pretty close to
as good in low light, but is better at focusing.

This is after adjusting the color balance in lightroom. The color temperature
slider is pegged at 2000K, and on some of them I tried to get even more
adjustment with the brush, to no avail.

Larry, you may be complaining about the focusing of the K-1, however
these pictures show again how good this camera performs in low light
situations.
It looks to me that with saturation or point color in Color Mixer of LR
you should be able to adjust colour balance where the artificial light
is too pronounced.

Well Larry, as Ralf says, you did a good job and really captured the
atmosphere. I must say I prefer the monochrome images. We haven't been
to a function like that for many years. They do occasionally have dance
evenings out here in the sticks but it is all Boeremusiek! (You can look

Re: PESO: Bellbird

2024-05-12 Thread Alan C
So there is no problem with camera shake. I still use the Jack Davis
formula TAV, 1/2000sec, f8 with my 170-500 for H/H at full stretch but
still, like you, I find the AF screw drive somewhat lacking & seldom
manage successful quick grabs. Too much glass for quick focus. The new
PLM's are greased lightning by comparison but my budget won't stretch
that far.  I get a success rate of only about 10% shooting aerobatics.
Thank goodness for digital. My 55-300 behaves much better.
