Thanks G, appreciate your comments.

Ken earlier commented:

I have done a few photo books on our travels, and these images with “isolated
subject” can really fill in the details when telling a story. What I haven’t
included here are the broader shots that give context to the detail. I’ll bring
in a few of those, and done!

An appealing set of photos, Stan! Excellent travel photography, IMO: Just a
little more editing (both small modifications to some of the cropping and maybe
drop a couple of the weaker ones) and some copy about the trip, the places,
etc, and you have the makings of a lovely small travel book or largish magazine

2018-02-21 Thread Stanley Halpin
Again, thanks to all for your generous comments. Bob, I must say I would have
not thought to compare my images to HCB!

Paul and Larry, your comments about style/palate combined with the HCB
allusions have got me thinking about what I am doing. I certainly do not have a
conscious style or palate that I strive for, I don’t have a pre-set in
LightRoom to render images “my” way. I just take photos that are interesting to
me and then tweak them in LR if needed until they look “right.” And I
certainly agree that most of the set I posted seem to fit together. So, I will
try to give some more thought to why I am doing what I am doing to achieve the
outcome I am getting.

BTW Ann, back to your earlier comment, at least one of my submissions to the
Annual is a close cousin to one posted here.

A very nice set of photos. The subjects were obviously chosen carefully, and
the framing is excellent. Most intriguing to me is the pallet. The colors
displayed in the set just work together so nice, and their beauty is
complemented by careful and correct rendering. Well done.

Re: GESO: My favorites - 2017

2018-02-20 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks all!
I’ll go back in later and add some more descriptive captions to supplement the
uninformative file numbers.

Igor, yes the grand canal shot is of the Grand Canal in Venice. As is the
smaller canal. The blue-topped church is on Santorini, the red topped chapel is
on Mykonos. The background for the yacht image is the coast of Santorini, if
you look closely you can see the whitewashed buildings in a jumble along the
clifftop.

Jack, the shot you tagged is interesting. I liked the scene well enough to stop
walking in the rain long enough to pull out the camera and compose/shoot. And I
was pleased with the result. But I very likely would have pressed onward to a
warm dry interior just down the way, but I wanted a “for the record” shot of
our hotel and hadn’t done one before. (You can see the Hotel Falier sign in the
back center.)

As I went back through I noticed that there is a 2nd one by Meg that I had not
acknowledged before, the one just before the Gianfranco shot. Also I should
comment that while most of the images are from Venice or the Greek Isles, the
first bird shot is from in front of our house in Michigan, the wood stork at
the end is from the Everglades. And the structure in #2 across the pond is the
A.B. Dow Home and Studio, a local attraction and the center of a major
Mid-Century Modern revival in our community. An interesting place to visit.
Yesterday we spent the afternoon there with a small group watching home movies
shot by A.B. Dow in the mid-1920s.

A very nice collection!
My favorite of these is probably the shot of (I am guessing) Venice -
with the busy "river/channel"-street and buildings. This one looks like a
classic painting (4659).
(The second one, 4474, with the small channel and reflections is also
nice)

After that, the blue-dome church hanging over the sea (I am guessing also
from Italy. - Amalfi coast?), the cat, and the yaht.

I thought that 5199 could be used on the election day with the title:
