Thanks Ralf and Ann.
All nice pics and a lot of impressive trees in this gallery.
In particular I like the snowfountain tree (Paul), the corvallis tree
(Larry) and the joshua tree (Ann).

Thanks. I had to google One Tree Hill. My tree is actually behind a small
hill. And yes album covers, those were the days. Maybe that's why I like
square crops.

I rarely comment on galleries or photo posts
(partly laziness, partly because I find that what I like is
very rarely what most of the other commenters seem to like)
but Toine's "One" just stood out for me in this month's offerings.
I could just see this as an album cover (remember what those were?).

Somewhere buried in the house I'm pretty sure I've got a box of
slides from over 40 years ago which includes a few shots taken
of Auckland's "One Tree Hill" - not with the original tree, of
course, but while the single Pine tree was still standing.
But even if I could unearth a slide I wouldn't be able to
scan it - the only film scanner I own is an onld Nikon one
that uses a SCSI interface ...

I took a lot of photos of the area with my little drone. And amongst my

Stan, no it is not the same family. Sure, the current owners got prints of
my picture and they did already have a copy of the old postcard of 1910.
The left part of the house was built in the 15th century and it served as a
farm house until 1919. Being the oldest house in the village, its history
is well documented..

I am just curious… in the 3rd slider image on the linked website, there is a

Re: May PUG is Up!

2022-05-04 Thread Stanley Halpin
A good collection for sure! I was quite struck by the way Filip’s Agate almost
seems to glow from within. Jostein’s somewhat abstract waterfall and somewhat
obtuse geology lecture were also a highlight. And the several coastal shots -
Bruce, David, Henk, Ralf - nicely catch a favorite subject of mine.

And then there is Daniel’s Haleakala Crater. Way back long ago (1975-76 or so)
I spent a few days on Maui. My last morning I got up way too early, drove up
the mountain to one of the crater overlooks with the intention of getting a
sunrise photo. Heavy clouds, sunrise photo op didn’t happen, and I didn’t hang
around because I had a plane to catch. I have always regretted not having time
to try and do that scene justice and I envy Daniel’s image.

an alleyway should look.

To me, an alley way is a run down, dangerous place with drunks,

2020-05-08 Thread ann sanfedele

Thanks Pat and Bob..
Yes, Stan's is stunning, and a genuine alley. but the whole gallery sings..

I had to go back to the 1980's and my film stuff to find my shot, btw -
because alley's are not common in Manhattan and not any place
I would normally want to walk along where there are some.. I had an
alley with multiple cats shot from my Paris book but I went for
something you lot had not seen yet...and I liked this one better anyway.

All good.

Thanks for the positive comments on my entry - this has long been one of my
favorite shots, one of the few of my own images which I have printed and on
display in our home.

I really like Ann’s! Either cat alone would have been good, they each have such
classic expressions of cat body language. The two of them working together is
great! And I like Rick’s. And the fog in Henk’s is a nice backdrop to the alley
in the foreground. And Don’s and…

All good.

Ralf, agreeing with Henk, the two spots of red, for me, are what make your
image interesting. If presented in B, you would lose those features as well
as losing the overall tonality.

about the *istDS and her Sony chip with those beautiful colours and the

Thanks for your effort.

I liked these most:
Henk Terhell . Beeches
Ken Waller .Carp River
Pat Temmerman ... Brisk Weather Walk
John Sessoms .. Grand Canyon Tree

If I were to choose just one that might have been
either the Carp River or the Beeches.

Re: May PUG is up

2019-04-29 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
There is a lot of excellent work in the May Gallery.

My favorites include John's Grand Canyon Tree, Ken's Carp River, and Pat's
Brisk Weather Walk. Ann's Salton Sea also stands out, and not just because
the SS was one of my haunts back when I was a young Marine in Yuma. Are
those PDML Cormorants?

Yes, really nice gallery overall - but I do have a favorite this time..
Bruce Nagel's shot of the new and old pier -
just a fascinating scene... Pat's marker also particularly floats my boat.

Re: May PUG is up!!

2014-05-06 Thread Dario Bonazza

Hi Darren,
I though about cloning out that out-of-focus stuff in the background, but
didn't want the pic would look like shot in the studio, so I decided to
leave it there.

Opinions, of course.

The image above was invited to Flickr EXPLORE from my photostream

I also think that Dario's portrait is the cream of the crop, although
the slight inclusion of whatever in the lower left is a bit

submissions of long-haired girls on swingsets. What are the chances?

It is an excellent gallery! Thanks for all your efforts in putting it
together, and for taking on the special refusal Pug as well. I really
appreciate the quality and quantity of your efforts on our behalf.

The May Pug is full of interesting and effective images. My personal
favorites are:

Blue Jay Feather by Ken Waller -- excellent detail and composition.

Assimilation by George K. Vlachou -- How did you see this, let alone
capture it so well?

Found in Maine by Ann Sanfedele -- An image with both pathos and humor.

Just Garbage by Bruce Walker -- I would never look at that object,
let alone see such an impressive photograph hiding there.

Head by Dag Thrane -- wonderful composition. The effect of the rust
and the peeling paint really makes it more interesting and effective.

Disembodied Scream with Arrow by Christine Aguila -- a surprising and
interesting find, well rendered.

Thanks and congratulations to all the submitters for such a compelling
group of images.

Brian:

I think we would have better participation if we talk it up a bit
about a week before the deadline.

I like the idea of a themed gallery, and always find it highly
interesting. I think we need to help Scott out by reminding each
other of the PUG and the deadline each month. It would also help if
folks would comment on the PUG entries the way we comment on the
PESOs.

Two or three years ago, we used to get 20-40 PUG entries. This is an example:
http://pug.komkon.org/06aug/index.html

The PENTAX Photo Gallery is a permanent gallery. PESOs and GESOs come
and then vanish into the ethernet. I think that the PUG is a very
enjoyable and useful concept, and that participation and appreciation
would both increase if we pay some attention to it.

YMMV.

Heck, when I was maintaining it we used to get ~100 entries (and I was hand
coding the pages, none of this namby automatic stuff they have now).
You are right about PESOs and the like. They come and go, but I think if
people want an online gallery to permanantly showcase their work, the PUG is
a really good concept. There is no jury telling you your work isn't good
enough, so it is inclusive no matter what level of photography you are at.
For me, this puts it several steps more desirable than the PPG.

I think that one of the problems (at least for me) is that I can't
load up several months in advance. I went to submit for the June
gallery and found that I couldn't. June's only two weeks away.
Unless I'm reminded again when the loading page is ready (that's
assuming that I notice the post) I'll likely forget to download June's
image.

I also think that part of the excitement of PUGs for me was that it
became a ritual on the first of each month: look excitedly to see who
submitted what, comment on list, read others' comments on the list -
there was always a buzz!

Now we don't know when a particular month will be posted, but it's
rare to be posted much before the end of the month. It's hard to get
excited about doing this with everything so uncertain on any given
month.

That being said I also realize that this is a volunteer-run enterprise
and Scott's doing this in his spare time on his dime, so I'm certainly
not complaining about him or his involvement in this. Scott, you're
doing a great job on this thankless stuff!

cheers,
frank

I agree, and I owe the PDML an apology. I came into this rather
gung-ho with lots of ideas and haven't really followed through with
most of them. Plus, I'm generally absent-minded and it often takes
someone saying something like Where the fuck is the PUG already? to
get me in gear. So I'll try to do better. Gentle reminders around
the 20th of the month are most welcome.

Thanks a bunch for not lynching me.

Just for giggles, if anyone is interested, this is the photo I use to

Well, now I don't feel like submitting!

;-)

Okay, seriously, I have to see what I have in my files that might fit
in with next month's topic. Or maybe go out tonight and shoot
something...

Well, let's face it, it's a thankless job and you've been doing it for
a while. I can't blame you for letting things slide once in a
while...

cheers,

Wow! Well, that should eliminate a lot of excuses for not participating!

Now, that IS an interesting shot!

Thanks again, Scott, for all your efforts on our behalf.
