Re: PESO 2019 - 012 - GDG

2019-02-13 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thank you for the compliment, Dan.

This was my first cruise and it was a gay cruise.

> Too much regimentation, too
> much crowding, too many delays gettin on and off at stops, getting fed,
> etc, to many promos for the casino.

It was none of those things. No regimentation at all, not crowded unless we
wanted to crowd together (… um, yeah, we did … 'nuff said…), no delays getting
on or off the ship, food was plentiful and available nearly 24/7, and I hardly
noticed the casino at all except to meet a couple of friends there (because
they like to gamble … I don't). There were no advertisements or promos, only
notices for the activities, dances, and shows that were offered, which were
diverse and plentiful. I booked for three excursions, both of which were fun
and informative (tour of Nassau, tour of a Tequila distillery in Cozumel, and a
guided visit to Mayan Ruins near Costa Maya).

Everyone—all the passengers, the staff, the tour director, the folks operating
the ship, everyone—was courteous throughout and accepting of everyone else.
Old, young, fat, thin, costumed to the nines, street clothes, only a jockstrap
… everyone got along and enjoyed everyone else's company. And helped others
when there was a problem, like when one of the more senior guys tripped on a
stone on the pier and eighteen guys came running to help him up, be sure he was
all right; like when the two young guys I was dancing with at one of the
parties noticed that a ship card had been dropped on the dance floor, picked it
up, and immediately left the dance to go to passenger services, give it to
them, and ask them to put a note on the person's door so he wouldn't worry
(anyone could have bought drinks on it all night… at $15@).

It was a delightful experience of having a good time with a lot of good people
in wonderfully 'exotic' places far from home. I have not had such a great time
in years. I'm booked to do the East Caribbean version of the same cruise next
year already… Can hardly wait! :)

Maybe folks and cruise providers for the regular cruises where everyone isn't
there as a community to have a good time *all together* should learn a lesson
from events like this.

¡Gracias a todos!

I took a nice two-hour walk through town in Roatàn. So many friendly people ...
even the folks hawking goods and tours turned out to be pretty friendly once
they accepted I wasn't buying anything. Beautiful colors and faces.

As much as I've used it now, I'm still learning the Light L16. It's a very
interesting camera to learn, with many subtleties to get the best out of it.
Slowly getting the knack of it. I can't wait to get all these photos home so I
can work with the full resolution versions of these images.

Re: PESO 2019 - in Cozumel - GDG

2019-02-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks for the compliment on the photo, Daniel!

Cozumel is like so many small tourist towns for me: Most of what gets thrust in
front of tourists is the junk for sale by a lot of people trying to make a
living. I ignore nearly all of that.

My little troupe of erstwhile friends and I got off the ship and took a short
tour which included an hour at a tequila maker. Nice tasting there! Then they
all headed to a beach club and evidently had a lovely time there. I was not
interested in the beach ... This is a gay cruise, there's much more fun to be
had... and a more entertaining view of the wildlife... on the ship's pool deck
with the guys than at the beach for me. So I had the taxi driver take me back
to the pier and spent the afternoon walking the ship and talking with people.

I didn't go on a gay cruise for the local color. As I said to one of the
beautiful young guys whom I had a margarita with, "We're here for us: We make
our own entertainment, we are our own entertainment, as we travel through
exotic places and enjoy being apart from our 'normal' world for a time. All of
us together." ];-)

I did have a great time alone with the taxi driver as he told me all about his
life: He competes in triathlon events, he cycles. A youngish man of 44 years,
his family came from the Island, his wife is from the mainland ... how they
met, their kids. He asked about my life in the USA. For a twenty minute ride,
it was a good long lifetime of sharing ideas and interests. That's the kind of
cultural exchange I like. :-)

2019-02-06 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Cozumel is famous for one thing, which it does extremely well: scuba
diving. Aside from that, it is a run-of-the-mil destination.

Cozumel sits at the northern edge of the longest and best reef in the
Caribbean, and the facilities for diving there are far superior to anything
else in the Caribbean. I would never dive with any dive operator in
Jamaica, other parts of Mexico, or any of the other islands; the
equipment is rarely up-to-date and well maintained, and the emergency
services are non-existent. Cozumel, however, exists almost entirely on
income from scuba divers, and it takes the sport very seriously. My son
and I loved Cozumel for the diving; my wife is not a diver, so she was
bored -- except for the hair-raising plane trip to Chichen Itza.

When I was a teenager I had a summer job in a hardware store. One of the old
boys who worked there was Reg, who'd fought Rommel in the desert. A regular
customer was a rather stuck-up, posh lady called Mrs Sandicock, which she
insisted was pronounced Sandicoe. Whenever she came in Reg made a point of
pronouncing her name very loudly, as written, and as she was leaving he would
turn to me and say "Always puts me in mind of my time in the desert, that
woman".

In port, Cozumel, Mexico ...

Our little troupe hired a short taxi/tour ride to a local Mayan info and
tequila distillery/plantation. Most then went on to the beach; I requested the
driver drop me back to the pier where I walked around a little while, then
re-boarded our ship.

There's nothing about a beach that I can enjoy more than the pool deck on the
ship... and there's no sand to bother with. :-) The tequila distillery was very
interesting, the port side shops pretty much the same as anywhere else in
today's world.

Enjoy!

Re: PESO 2019 - 012 - GDG

2019-01-29 Thread lrc
Thanks for coming out to my show.
It was fun checking out your bike, quite the machine.

The big seller at the show were my fancy postcards. I get them printed on
poster board at Costco, them cut them to 4x6. I bought a rubber stamp for the
back. I sold several of them at $5 each. My high profit items were plain 4x6
prints where I sold a couple at $2 each.

The prints are still up in Saratoga. Folks seemed to be impressed by them, but
not impressed enough to buy any. Oh well.
