Really late comment regarding the tools you recommend :
I guess these tools become irrelevant when you start checking zones with
pdns custom records (ie : Lua/Alias).
@Daniel, any chance you found a workaround since you first posted this
thread ?

I recommend other tools, eg:
ldns-verify-zone
and
named-checkzone, named-compilezone
PowerDNS is not very strict. It happens quite easily that a zone loaded
and served by PowerDNS can not tranfered by a Bind slave. Hence, I
recommend the tools from Bind to verify a zone.

Is there a method of verifying a zone file, possibly with pdnsutil, that
validates it without actually "using" it? I *assume*
pdnsutil load-zone ZONE FILE
would perform validation - but that would destroy any existing zone.
