Re: [PEDA] Simulation tools
Also still with 2004 and v. little change from 99SE spice. Slightly more stable perhaps. It is not well behaved but it does produce results. I use it mostly for concept checking; the models are OK but not always accurate. As Cliff points out, creating new models is a nightmare. I use it to see if something might work rather than will work. Big dissappointments are still the temperature sweep (persistently crashes for temps over 50, I suspect model problems), and I haven't found a way to create test vectors for logic circuits. It may be possible using a ROM model but the whole process looks too grisly for words. SPICE is an awful way to do logic simulation. If you are doing transistor level modelling of chip internals, it makes sense. If you have a logic schematic using a bunch of misc. chips, it just slows to an absolute crawl. There are very good logic simulators that work. ModelSim is part of the Xilinx CPLD/FPGA suites, and although I don't like their GUI much, the logic simulation works fine, and must be 10,000 times faster than SPICE. Re: [PEDA] Simulation tools
We haven't upgraded to Designer 6 as of yet (still using 2004). I have never had much luck with simulations in Protel / Altium. It was always difficult to de-bug the simulations. There was little feedback from the program and not enough information in the documentation. We use MicroCap (Spectrum Software - sells for $4,500.00 US) for our analog simulations. It has been around along time. It works pretty well and I have had pretty good luck using vendor supplied models. We also use vendor supplied programs (i.e. Linear's Switcher CAD, etc.). oo Cliff Gerhard, P.E.
