(1) A LONG LIFE
One week ago, April 16, 2024, the Brazilian logician Newton Da Costa died,
after a life of 94 years + 7 months (He was born September 16, 1929).
I tell here the influence of Newton da Costa in the development of my work
and future projects dedicated to him.

(2) MY MEETING WITH DA COSTA, PARIS 1991
I met Newton da Costa in January 1991 in Paris and he invited me to work
with him in Brazil.
Details of the story can be found here:
http://www.jyb-logic.org/JYB50

(3) PARACONSISTENT LOGIC
My interest for the work of Newton da Costa was initially related to
paraconsistent logic:
J.-Y.Béziau, “Adventures in the paraconsistent jungle”, in Handbook of
Paraconsistency, College Publications, London, 2007, pp.63-80:
https://www.jyb-logic.org/adv3.pdf
I have been involved in the organization of the World Congresses of
Paraconsistency:
https://www.paraconsistency.org/
The 7th edition will take place in Oaxaca, Mexico, Sept 2-6, 2024:
https://sites.google.com/view/wcp7
I am the editor of the Paraconsistent Newsletter.
The first interview is with Newton da Costa:
https://www.paraconsistency.org/2016w
The latest one with João Marcos:
https://sites.google.com/view/paranews-2024-1
There is a special issue of the South American Journal of Logic (SAJL, a
journal I launched with my colleague Marcelo Coniglio in 2015),
edited by Luis Felipe Bartolo Alegre and José Carlos Cifuentes, dedicated
to the Peruvian philosopher Francisco Miró Quesada, a long time friend of
Newton da Costa, including his letter proposing the expression
"paraconsistent logic", on a request by da Costa.
SAJL Volume 6, Issue 2, December 2020:
https://www.sa-logic.org/sajl-62.html
This year, in January, I organized, together with Luis Alegre, in Cusco,
Peru:
SALOME 1: The 1st South American LOgic MEeting

(4) UNIVERSAL LOGIC
I developed the universal logic project based on my collaboration with
Newton da Costa on the theory of valuations, as explained here:
J.-Y.Béziau, “From paraconsistent to universal logic”, Sorites, 12 (2001),
pp.5-32.
https://www.jyb-logic.org/papers/From%20paraconsistent%20logic%20to%20universal%20logic-2.pdf
After spending one year with Newton da Costa in São Paulo 1991-92, I moved
with his support to Poland for one year and a half (1992-1993).
This is where I coined the expression "Universal Logic", details here:
The Lvov-Warsaw School : a True Mythology
https://www.jyb-logic.org/LWS
I defended my PhD "Recherches sur la Logique Universelle" at the
Department of Mathematics of the University Denis Diderot Paris in 1995,
after a Fulbright stay at the Department of Mathematics of the University
of California, Los Angeles,
and an additional stay with da Newton Costa in São Paulo in 1994 where I
wrote my PhD.
After two years at Stanford working with Patrick Suppes, a good friend of
Newton da Costa, I moved to Switzerland in 2002.
In 2007 I founded the journal Logica Universalis (Brikhäuser/Springer)
https://link.springer.com/journal/11787
after having organized the 1st UNILOG, World Congress and School on
Universal Logic in Montreux, Switzerland, 2005

(5) NEWTON DA COSTA LOGIC PRIZE AND THE WORLD LOGIC PRIZES CONTEST
I launched the Newton da Costa logic prize in September 2014, for his 85th
birthday:
https://www.uni-log.org/newton-da-costa-prize.html
This led to the creation of logic awards worldwide and the World Logic
Prizes Contest.(WLPC).
The first edition took place at the 6th UNILOG in Vichy in 2018, the second
at the 7th UNILOG in Crete in 2022:
https://sites.google.com/view/unilog-2022/7th-congress/logic-prizes
The third edition will take place at the 8th UNILOG in Cusco, Peru, in
December 2025.
We plan to have for this edition 25 countries competing. People who would
like to organize a logic prize in their country are welcome to contact the
Logica Universalis Association - LUA:
http://www.logica-universalis.org/LUAD

(6) WORLD LOGIC DAY
After the 1st edition of the WLPC in Vichy in 2018, I projected to organize
the World Logic Day (WLD) on January 14, day of birth of Tarski and death
of Gödel:
Logic Prizes et Cætera
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11787-018-0215-6
The first edition of the WLD was organized by LUA in more than 50 locations
around the world on January 14, 2019:
https://www.logica-universalis.org/wld
and was recognized the same year by UNESCO after my visit to the UNESCO
Brazilian Ambassador in Paris in April 2019:

(7) NEWTON DA COSTA 90TH BIRTHDAY - SEPTEMBER 16, 2019, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Including congratulations from researchers around the world:

(8) CONGRESS FOR THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEWTON DA COSTA - DECEMBER 2019,
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL

Gary was not on your recipient list but you obviously intended for him to
receive it.  Peirce-l doesn't receive your messages, at least for the time
being. - Ben

Gary and Ben,

Why do you insist on punishing me instead of Jon?  Or both?

You asked me to forward any note to Jon to you for prior approval.  I went one
step further.  I promised that I would never again send or reply to any note by
Jon.  As you may have seen, my notes to everybody else are perfectly fine.

The reason why I continued that thread is for one very simple reason:  I
refused to let Jon have the last word. There are many prominent Peirce
scholars, who subscribed in former years and some who continue to subscribe but
do not send any notes.  As some have explained (offline to me), there is one
very annoying reason:  Jon never allows anybody to have the last word.  Just
look back at many, many threads.  In every thread in which Jon is involved, he
has the last word.   And that is not because he had he stronger argument.

In many notes on very interesting threads, somebody will make one remark that Jon
disagrees with.  He'll respond to that point with "a barrage of quotations" (as
Robert Marty said) and ignore all the other issues.  And he continues on that narrow
thread until the other person stops -- usually from exhaustion or disgust.

You asked me to forward any note to Jon to you for prior approval.  I went one
step further.  I promised that I would never again send or reply to any note by
Jon.  As you may have seen, my notes to everybody else are perfectly fine.

So please restore by access to P-List.  I guarantee that there will never again
be any note from me that anybody might complain about.

And since I cannot say anything to Jon, I recommend that you make one
suggestion to him:  Please imitate Socrates, especially as Plato portrays him
in the early essays  Socrates never contradicts anyone.  He just ask questions.
For people whose ideas are erroneous, inconsistent, or poorly thought out,
their answers quickly get them tied up in knots.

If Jon were to imitate Socrates, he could state all his comments and quotations
as questions -- and often get much more interesting responses.   Often from
people who have very  important  new ways of looking at the old issues.
