A few words of introduction:
My original academic efforts were in the liberal arts, primarily
Religious Studies. I later went back to school and completed degrees
in mathematics, but my interests were in taking on the (ambitious and
thankless, as you all know) task of developing an integrated
generalist understanding that spanned the usual disciplines. I next
went to an interdisciplinary graduate program at Stanford
(Engineering Economic Systems) with the hope of finding like-minded
people, and focused on modeling issues (including AI) during my time
there. I didn't find the community of mind I was seeking, however,
with the exception of meeting my husband (trained in Chem. E, worked
at JPL, had gone back to school for an opportunity to do broader
research). We eventually decided to take leaves of absence from our
programs at Stanford to develop a program of our own, and have spent
the past 15 years as Independent Scholars (as Gary F. puts it).
We really appreciate the community this list affords, and hope we can
make some useful contributions.
