it is very clear that the us health care systme has great technical ability to 
provide high tech medical care.  but we are terrible at preventing illness, 
especially for some groups (the poor and other marginalized peoples) and in 
providing health care to those who are sick if they do not money to access the 
market
studies about this can be found in a variety of medical journals- you might look 
at the new england journal of medicine report on health in harlem (pub about a 
year ago) and an famous study of the "death zone" surrounding the teaching 
hospitals in boston pub in 1978-79 or so also in the new england journal.
