A different explanation: These stripes sound like the scratches made for innoculations against smallpox, or was it polio? I faintly remember a little metal instrument with serrated edges, that left little parallel marks, though it was on our shoulders, not backsides. If not properly cared for, they got infected, and left nasty scars.
