Democratic Struggles in the U.S.
The New Deal Era

a class taught by Marvin Gettleman

Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm
8 sessions beginning April 2

This course takes up the structure of law, politics, and
cultural endeavor that animated U.S. society in the
Depression Era of the 1930s. We will focus on popular
struggles--the building of the CIO, the fight for social
security and expanded worker rights. The background of
general New Deal policy will also be examined, especially in
the light of the intense attack these policies are under
today. The role of the left, especially that of the
Communist Party, USA, which was dominant at the time, will
be carefully examined.

Gettleman is an editor of _Science and Society_. In 1965 he
published the best-selling _Vietnam: History, Documents and
Opinions_. He has written on U.S. radicalism, working-class
history, and cultural-intellectual developments, as well as
on Central America and the Middle East.

This class is part of The Brecht Forum's series, "U.S.
History for Today's World."

Suggested tuition is $35.
