We will focus on popular struggles--the building of the CIO, the fight for social security and expanded worker rights. The background of general New Deal policy will also be examined, especially in the light of the intense attack these policies are under today. The role of the left, especially that of the Communist Party, USA, which was dominant at the time, will be carefully examined. Gettleman is an editor of _Science and Society_.
