what is perl..?

the code name "omega" would be a fitting handle...after all, this will be
the last perl of all...i am obviously assuming perl 6 will not be still born.

within *three years* of its release, perl will be a byword in commercial
programming...non-commercial programming languages are scarcely
mentioned in public and seldom published. they retire to newsgroups.

>commercial should be interpreted here as "used to support the profit-

>public should be interpreted as "profit-driven, non-academic people."

it is clear that your god had no choice, but to rewrite perl. the figurative
toilet bowl swishing (one imagines tim explaining the way of business
to larry) wall received after announcing that perl 5.x was the last word,
was also in fact the last straw. writing perl 6 was not, is not the answer.

Given all this chatter, YAP might be better. You get 1 guess for what "P"
stands for. (No it's not Python).

How about just "O'Reilly" for the code name? ;-)

The only acceptable code name other than "Perl6" is "YACN" ;)

Obviously Red Hat had partaken in quite a sampling of Guinness when they
decided to release 7.

Perl 6 sounds good. I suspect some people would be leaning towards a
gem, given Topaz and Sapphire.

Well, no, the O'Reilly ones had, but then most O'Reilly books have animals on
them. Oh, and Beginning Perl had an animal on the cover, but that was me.
