Documents needed for Special Registration The HIO recommends that individuals who are subject to Special Registration
review the INS website for details and contact the HIO with any questions.
Individuals required to report to the INS for Special Registration
must:
Answer questions under oath before an immigration officer. The answers will
be recorded.
Present evidence of their legal status in the United States. Evidence
includes:
Passport, Form I-94 issued upon admission, and required visa document (Form
I-20, Form DS-2019 / IAP-66, H-lB approval notice, or O-1 approval notice).
Proof of residence, such as a rental agreement. Proof of full-time student status, in the form of a letter from the Registrar's Office; OR proof of employment, in the form of a letter from the hiring department. Any other information requested by the INS officer; and
Be fingerprinted and photographed by the INS officer. In addition to the information above, a Special Registrant may be asked to
provide the following:
All phone numbers (home, work, cell, beeper, pager)
Information about the individual's parents (names, dates of birth, cities/countries of birth, addresses, and phone numbers) Contact names, addresses, and telephone numbers of any relatives in the United States Social security, credit card, ATM card numbers; driver's license numbers; and work identification cards. An address for a contact in the United States other than a family member At the time of the initial registration, the INS officer will inform the
registrant of his/her annual reporting obligations and requirement to notify the
INS of any changes of address.
Special Registration does not apply to nonimmigrants who hold A or G visa
status and U.S. permanent residents originally from one of these
countries. Neither is it applicable to individuals who applied for asylum
on or before an INS specifed date. This information is available on the INS web
