This is most likely a dumb question, but if we caught the queen, does that mean
the colony is most likely inside the building? Has anyone had experience
dealing with carpenter ant colonies? Our building was built in 1896, so there
is a lot of old, moist wood for them to live in. I am just trying to figure out
what steps to take next. Please e-mail me with suggestions - here is my e-mail,

2 ants. Large one looks like a de-alate queen carpenter ant. Maybe the small
one is a pavement ant (2-node), but not sure, could be something else. Need a
better view of it. The moth is a clothes moth (tineid).

The psocid is Dorypteryx domestica (a minor pest if at all). The "dermestid
larva" is a Bristly Millipede (Polyxenus sp. - signifies a damp environment,
but not a pest).
I'm not sure about the moth - not a familiar British species.
Best wishes

Hello everyone,

I can tell that summer is finally starting, because our pest traps are
becoming much more popular! I need help identifying three different insects
this time around. The first two (labeled unid 1 and unid 2) are each about 2 mm
long. My first guesses for those two are Psocid (unid 1) and Dermestid larvae
(unid 2), but I'd like to have an expert look at them before I add that to my
records. I'm worried that the third may be some sort of Clothing moth. Please
help!

We've had some success using an unscented kitty litter to eliminate mothball
odor. We put the stinky artifacts in an open plastic bin, which is then placed
into a larger bin. The base of the larger bin is lined with the litter, and the
smaller bin with the artifacts is placed on top of that litter layer. Once that
is set, put the lid on the larger bin, and wait!

Hello all,

I am looking for recommendations of literature about the safe removal of
mothball residue and scent (I do not have any information about the exact
chemical or product used; I am simply faced with some artifacts with VERY
strong scent of mothballs). All I can gather is that PPE and fume hood will be
required for work on the objects, but I am wondering in particular if there is
a way to significantly reduce-or remove, ideally-the scent and residue so that
objects are safe to display in public areas and with other art objects.

Please reply with any suggestions you might have!

Thank you kindly.

Best,

Cara

We've had those at our museum as well! I believe those are Ground Beetles. From
what I was told, they wander in with visitors, and shouldn't cause any alarm.
They don't feast on collections items like other beetles.

Hello all,

My curatorial assistant found these three similar beetles in one of our insect
traps today (a public gallery with a wide variety of items on display
(taxidermy specimens, wooden sculpture, ceramics, furniture, lithic material,
most of which are displayed on wooden pedestals).

They are 5 mm in length and the one on the right is actually a brown color,
rather than black. We typically get spiders and mites and centipedes caught in
the traps in this particular gallery so we're concerned about these as we don't
know what they are. They appeared within the last 10 days.

Please advise at your convenience and thank you for your help.

Disclaimer: I am not an entomologist. However, I have found these pests (or a
very similar pest) in my own traps, and have had them identified through this
list.

I think the larger beetle in Trap 1 is a Rove Beetle. When I found this type of
beetle in my own collections area a few months ago, someone from this pestlist
identified it as such, and added that the Rove Beetle is an incidental, and
probably just followed someone in from outside.

I also think the beetle in the upper right corner of the second trap photo
might be a Ground Beetle (Carabidae caminara). I am interested to learn what
the other two might be!

Hi everyone,

I have recently had a few unwanted visitors in our basement level storage
(primarily textiles and ethnographic materials). I have attached a couple of
blunder trap images with a tape measure in centimeters for scale.

I believe the first image shows a hide beetle, partially chewed by the adjacent
smaller beetle (black carpet beetle?). Can anyone confirm? I have very
occasionally had these before.

On the second trap, the black one at the top I have also seen before and have
been previously told it was a mealworm beetle. The two lower ones are new to me
and appear to be the same species as each other. The photo doesn’t show it
well, but they are an iridescent copper colour. These were on a common blunder
trap that was near a pheromone trap for beetles (I’m experimenting) that has
attracted larder beetles – may be a clue?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Dee

Hi Megan,

This individual is a bit worn and rubbed, but yes I'd say it's an example off
the Brown House moth, Hofmannophila pseudospretella. This species is frequently
found at a background level in domestic and other buildings where it is usually
not too numerous or damaging. It is a species to be aware of though and
monitoring should tell you if control is necessary.

Thank you so much! Based on where they were found in the building, any of these
could be the source.

Thanks again for your speedy assistance!

These flies are Black Fungus Gnats - Sciaridae. They may be breeding indoors in
pot plants, or in soil outside, or in rotting wood. They do breed in fungi as
well!
No threat to your collections, excepting as food for Anthrenus. It's possible
they may be attracted to lights at night, and are entering through an open
window.
Tony.

These small flying insects have been found throughout our collections
area. I am not sure how nervous I should be about them! This particular trap is
near an exterior door, but there were 47 of these flying insects on this one
trap alone. I am familiar with springtails, and we tend to see surges of them
this time of the year, but I have not seen these insects in such high numbers
before. Please help!

Thank you,

[pestlist] Pest ID help please

2015-11-13 Thread Jablonski, Megan T CIV NHHC, NUM

This pest, approximately 1 mm long, was found along an outer wall in our
collections storage area. At first glance, I thought it was just another
springtail, but a look at him through the microscope suggested otherwise. Can
someone help me identify this little guy?

Thank you!
