Critics wary as Google's Chrome begins an ad crackdown https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/critics-wary-googles-chrome-preps-ad-blocking-crackdown-53089393
On Thursday, Google will begin using its Chrome browser to eradicate ads it deems annoying or otherwise detrimental to users. It just so happens that many of Google's own most lucrative ads will sail through its new filters. - - - My own sense is that the kinds of ads that will be blocked by Chrome are quite widely viewed as highly objectionable. I overall view this effort as a significant net positive. That said, in the current toxic political environment, there is a real risk that anything Google does in this sphere could invite additional knee-jerk regulatory scrutiny, especially by the EU, which obviously already has its claws out when it comes to Google. I've also received a number of queries today regarding whether Google's move to introduce AMP capabilities into email -- a project which as you probably know I am highly critical of for technical reasons -- might itself invite similar regulatory scrutiny. It's definitely possible. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein (lau...@vortex.com): https://www.vortex.com/lauren Lauren's Blog: https://lauren.vortex.com Google Issues Mailing List: https://vortex.com/google-issues Founder: Network Neutrality Squad: https://www.nnsquad.org PRIVACY Forum: https://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: https://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Google+: https://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: https://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 _______________________________________________ pfir mailing list https://lists.pfir.org/mailman/listinfo/pfir
