Hi,

My intend is to translate pgAdmin's manual in french during 1.10 beta. I
have two questions about this:

* can I use the svn repo to store the french manual (a good location
  would be docs/fr_FR)?

* will we put the translation on pgadmin.org website? I have another
  possibility (docs.postgresql.fr) but perhaps it would be better to
  have it also on pgadmin.org.

Yes - that's what that location is intended for :-)

Yes, I think so. It shouldn't take too much effort to integrate with

The same way I do with the PostgreSQL manual. At beta time, I get a diff
between the old and the new docs.

Changing the toolchain could be a good idea. Having a better
documentation would be a good thing too.

As far as I know, no one is working on fa_IR translation. Someone 
already worked on it a bit as you can see here :

I checked the translation status on pgadmin.org, and saw that French
is at 100% with 2091 of 2091 translated strings; and Italian is at
100% with 2104 of 2104 translated strings.

My understanding was that there ist the same amount of string
constants in all languages.

What did I miss?

You're right. That can use as much words as they want, the number of
strings should be the same.

I try a stringextract/stringmerge... there is actually 2131 strings to
translate. I have some issues with the svn commit in stringmerge
because of end of line inconsistences. I will work on this.

wxrc -g gets Cancel and Help strings from .xrc files. pgadmin.po has 
them. So, I don't really think it is a bug with pgAdmin.


Is it a bug with wxWidgets ?

I am sure it is not a pgAdmin issue, because I checked and button
translations (Ok, Cancel etc) appear properly in pgAdmin dialogs (for
example, the Options dialog). I was referring to those dialogs that are most
probably used from the wxWidgets framework (a text + 2 or 3 standard
buttons). I followed the discussion on the Serbian and Spanish translation
and it seems that the list of available languages in wxWidgets is determined
differently. I will work on pgAdmin translation only and warn the person who
tries to translate wxstd.po about this issue.

BTW, I would like to introduce more standardization in Macedonian
translations of db-related tools, and I found this site:

Is it ok if I register the pgAdmin translation there, so anyone who
translates db-related software can reuse common db-related terms ?

The Macedonian translation is unmaintained. I'm glad you wish to spend 
time updating it. Send your updates to me, so I can put them on SVN. 
Which .po file did you take ? the one from 
http://www.pgadmin.org/translation/status.php ?


wxWidget doesn't seem to be translated in Macedonian

list.

Hi Guillaume,

I've updated the translation templates on SVN-trunk to allow early
translators to get started, and to help us find any typos early. Please
note that at this point, all strings are still subject to change, but
from experience I'd say most won't.

From now on updated translations based on the new templates probably
shouldn't be back-patched.

I don't know of a way to test it. I just sent the french one to Dave.
And I checked my translation directly on the website.

You can send your .po file to me, so I can apply it on the SVN. But it
must be completed before.

also, the html files in hints directory: the meta tag says they're
windows-1252. i've tried saving them as windows-1250 but that worked ok
only on windows, i got garbage for some chars on linux. right now i'm
using iso-8859-2, which seems to display all characters correctly, but i
haven't tested that on windows yet. i'll send these files later today or
tomorrow. which character set is best to use and which character sets
are available? for slovenian characters, i can choose these: win-1250,
latin2 and utf8. which will cause the least trouble?


Use the charset that fits your needs best (but use the same encoding 
throughout that directory, some files may be assembled to a single one 
at runtime). If it displays correctly in any standard browser, it should 
be good in pgAdmin as well.

i have resorted to using html codes, such as #268, #269, etc. for some 
special characters. i use windows-1252 character encoding, as is used in 
english hint files. this seems to work both on linux (tested on suse 
9.3) and windows (tested on a w2k platform with a binary snapshot dated 
23. 10. 2005). is this an acceptable solution or is there some other 
way this can/should/is preferred to be done?


If it displays correctly, use what you like best.

so far as i have been able to test (2 win2k systems and 2 suse linux 9.3 
systems) the tips from tips.txt are being displayed correctly if using 
utf-8 encoding. so i guess i will leave it at that.


by the way, i also have some questions regarding this tip:
pgAdmin III is a completely new version of pgAdmin written in C++ using 
the wxWindows framework to allow it to run on Windows and *nix systems.


do i keep wxwidgets in the translation or do i use wxwindows?

that is what i thought, so i have prepared all the files, saved them as 
latin2 and gave it a try. it was ok on linux and garbage on windows, 
like i described in a previous post. so here also i will use html codes 
until a complaint is received :)


attached is the slovenian tips.txt file. the guru hints will be arriving 
shortly, i hope :)

No, just fixed the en_US version to refer to wxWidgets also.

Reviewing the translations, I found that the automatic merge process may 
introduce errors that might hurt us. Sometimes the fuzzy logic assigns 
strings that are not only misleading but may lead to a crashing app, 
because the translated string includes a %s or so, while the original 
doesn't. This is easily detectable, when the *.mo writing is done by the 
committer, because poedit 1.25 and up will complain in this situation. 
The debian 1.25 version will also highlight the string, 1.31 win32 won't.

The last translator information will be lost in this case, but I don't 
care too much about that; translator credits are in the docs anyway.

Errr, good question. Do you know (or can you find out) what is the norm in Windows and 
other Microsoft software? When it comes to UI design, they are generally pretty good 
so following their lead makes sense.

Dear translators,
recently we released the first Beta of pgAdmin III V1.2, which has some 
great enhancements over the 1.0 version; have a look at 
http://www.pgadmin.org/pgadmin3/beta . It will probably gain even more 
attendance than before, because the binary distribution of PostgreSQL 
8.0 Beta for Windows already includes this version, integrated in a 
convenient installer. As a consequence, we can expect that most 
PostgreSQL users on Windows will maintain their database systems using 
pgAdmin III.

The translatable strings have increased from former 765 to just over one 
thousand now, i.e. it's just a fraction of the work already done. We and 
probably many users throughout the world would be very grateful if you 
could contribute an updated translation. As usual, all you need can be 
found at http://pgadmin.postgresql.org/pgadmin3/translation.php .

In case you won't be able to contribute a translation any more, please 
drop us a short note so we can mark the translation as vacant.

Btw homepage have incorrect status. I know that yesterday I updated 
latvian po file with newest pot file and I had all 1015 translated 
strings but pgadmin homepage shows that there is 4 untranslated strings. 
I dowloaded latvian po file from homepage and there everything was ok 
(1015 translated strings). I still think that there is something wrong 
with translations.php script ;)

Oops, thanks for pointing this out. Actually, I messed up lv translation 
with stringmerge. Corrected in cvs now, web site will rsync soon.

thing be merged at once (like in a transaction) and not part-way
through? Like some had 1008 as total, and others 1012...

No. You can update from template any time yourself, using pgadmin3.pot.

The existing po files for the website can be downloaded from:

From there, you can download the pot and po files, updated from CVS.

 could simply provide nearly direct links to the web interface to CVS.

Peter website is very nice and well designed.

Right, but for a minimum, at least the native language name must be 
translated.

Before we do, could we have more input on the technical side. Is it possible 
to avoid the extraction of language names?
 

The language names are extracted from a file that's put into the 
pgadmin3 source tree for that sole purpose. It just would have to be 
removed to avoid extraction. But it's certainly there on purpose...
When starting pgadmin3 for the first time, the language selection is 
presented in the default locale, assuming that the user should be able 
to handle the system language. So if a Japanese sits in front of a 
Islandic machine, and he succeeds starting pgadmin3, he should be able 
to locate his preferred language in the selection. Ultimatively, the 
locale canonical name is always displayed, so if you messed up 
something, you'd still be able to locate some known language.

At the moment, language names are taken from internal wxWindows 
structures, by iterating the languages being present. These names are 
stored english, and are translated with standard gettext. Another 
approach would be to have an own list of languages, with pre-translated 
strings in it. This would enable us to display every language name in 
its native language right from the start.

This is my preferred approach. Translating languages is not interesting 
because you will look for your native tongue in your native language.

It is acceptable to display a list of 40 languages (I hope :), with some not 
displaying well, if the user can switch the list back to English and select 
the font interactively. At least, it will make sure pgAdmin3 translation 
displays well in a chosen language.

I added the file ui/pgadmin3.lng, which contains the full names as 
wxWindows knows them, together with the native translation. I copied all 
translation if available from the corresponding *.po file. On my Linux 
system, all language names display well, except for Farsi; the arabic 
font seems to be defective, being defined to consume much more space 
then it actually does. Hopefully, the Farsi and Arabic users have a 
better font. On win32, the font is ok.

Each translator should state which exact language version he supports, 
including specification of the land (or lands), and provide the 
translation. To make translation of the language name easier, I provided 
a languages.po file, including all language names. Translators may use 
the languages.po file (attached), and send it back with just the native 
name translated. We'll add this to the pgadmin3.lng file.

cvsroot itself. I can't see why this happened, AFAICS wincvs did 
everything right. Dave, can you have a look at languages.hwx (source)

The thought of me who is not a guidelines.
I didn't think that there was a problem in the beginning
in Japan from the viewpoint of one for the custom with the alphabet
indication.
And, it was there though it thought that it hardly became a problem
on the surface because the locale decision of the early value was smart.

But, UNICODE has a very good future.
pgAdmin3 will satisfy a requirement when it wants to operate it about the
one except for the language which one has.
An expression changes by the use after the choice. A user must understand
the language expression chosen at that time.
At that time, it thought whether a handled person had to understand English
of the base.

up did a translation again for the reason with ja_JP.

I agree with you, we should not change shortcuts. The translation guidelines 
did not make it clear enough. Changing shortcuts can only create double 
entries and add bugs...

I just want to clarify this: 

'Original String' prefixed with  should not be changed in order to preserve
default shortcut keys. I understand that 'items' that starts with  denotes
ALT+('items' first Character, next to ) as its shortcut key.

Not aware 'til I read the translation_howto, I translated some of the 
prefixed 'Original Strings' into my native language. Later I noticed that
typical Filipino PgAdmin3 user will rather use the default pgadmin language than
'tl_PH' language for a possible reason that some shortcut keys are denoted to a
different 'item' compared to the default 'en_US' translation. I think as much as
possible, translated pgadmin must preserve important shortcut keys in order for
the pgadmin user not to missed up things.

 1) In the case of Creating a new %s, I think it would help if %s is
 not only the object name itself (View, Table, ...) but includes new
 (new view, new table,  tableau nouveau, neue Tabelle, neuer
 Operator...). I'll be recoding typeNameList[] the next days for this.

It won't make it in several languages. Non european languages follow strange 
rules that are hard to even imagine (sometimes no verb, sometimes no 
adjective, sometimes only aggregates, etc...).

You should simply create different strings: Create a new view, Create a new 
table, etc...

No, it was just a 0.02 cents remark.

To summarise, when possible, sentences should never be built by a 
search/replace mechanism like %s. If you use %s, be sure the replaced 
string is completely invariable (the name of a user, etc...).
