What is opening the port pgpool or the database?
Sometimes I found out that postgres opens the port and have to stop
pgpool and postgres and restart postgrsql and pgpool again.

If your database opens the port then pgpool finds it in use when it
starts.

If you have a failover log it will tell you which node is acting as master. I
am not sure about the failback command.

When you make changes to the database you have to make the changes using
the pgpool port.
If you make your changes while connected to the postgresql port; the
changes will only happen locally.

How are you starting pgpool?
The way we use it it logs to pgpool.log fine.
nohup pgpool -n /var/log/pgpool.log 21

Tastsuo,
I am not very well versed but I am troubleshooting ppgool issues as
well.
Did you check your pgpool.conf file?
If you place a setting for your password there that might be the
reason.
Also, check your permission on that file.
Make sure the user you configured has permission to read
