If you su postgres, can you run pg_ctl and get the database up by itself?

With identd authentication a username is still specified. But you have
to own the process to login with that username. So generally speaking
(absent sudo and the like) you can generally login

/stops PostgreSQL. At
least the ones that come with the PostgreSQL source are pretty easy to
understand.
I may post back the info of the init file, I know there is postgresql in the
init.d directory. And hope to get your further help from that.
That would be the file.

Right. But passwords are ineffective with trust authentication. If you
need them you will need to use password, md5, or the like instead.

There is a free Perl script which is called something like pgautodoc which
creates DIA diagrams from databases. Take a look for it on Freshmeat.

Try doing an initdb on the other computer OR shutting down postgreSQL
(mandatory) and then copying over your data directory.

Hi Ashok;
Check the documentation on the system catalogs. You can look up types
there, etc. using joins from the system catalogs.
Something like
SELECT typname FROM pg_types WHERE oid IN (SELECT atttypid FROM pg_attribute
WHERE attname = 'column_name' AND attrelid = (SELECT oid FROM pg_class
At the risk of stating the obvious, also check to make sure Postmaster
is listening on port 5432. To do this log in as root and run /sbin/fuser
-vn tcp 5432. If postmaster is not listed it may only be running with
unix sockets. This measn that you must pass the -i flag to postmaster
when it
