Is it possible to partition a large table in differtent disks?
For example
names from A to K in one disk and from L to Z in another.

Yep.
Just create file systems belonging to the postgres super user, create
tablespaces on those file
Does anyone have experience with pghotbackup? I need to write a
number of backup scripts. I don't see a reason for that, if someone
has already done a good one.

One way (the only one I could think of) is to dump the schema using the
custom format and then use the pg_restore to list the contents of the
dump file:

I have searched the archives database, with no luck.
