Dave did use NetBSD 6.1 (IIRC), which uses an ancient gcc version. I would suggest to go for NetBSD-current (if someone sets it up before the netbsd-7 branch, or 7 post-branch), which uses gcc 4.8.3 on vax. All other architectures already used a more modern gcc on 6. However, there is still a bit of fallout to fix in -current.
