Our hobby lost a fine fellow with the passing of John
Davis on 9/16/07. John was a mentor collector when I
first started collecting back in the 70's. He always
coached me to buy quality first and stay away from
junk and duplicates. John was influenced by first
generation collectors and he could never understand my
attraction to uprights. He always laughed when I
reminded him that I apply his advice and keep nothing
but the most unusual Victrolas. He even found a
Victrola XVIII for me but that was followed by...I
don't know why anyone would want it!. One of my
favorite memories was a trip to Union with John in the
late 1970's. There was a bit of riverboat gambler
in him and he convinced me to jointly buy a fancy MS
with big oak horn. Then we bought a brass bell horn,
attached it to the MS and sold it for the original
purchase price. It wasn't exactly turning lead into
gold but it was fun to turn a brass horn into a wood
horn.John had not been too active in the
phonograph hobby for the last fifteen years but had
been pursuing early light bulbs and related items. He
had possibly the finest privately owned light bulb
collection in the country. I will miss my good friend
very much. Jerry Blais

I would assume that this was a place where you could purchase Edison
Cylinders or phonographs. The only place from that era I have seen the word
Edisonia is on the top of an early Edison Bell British Cylinder Gold Molded
Record. Across the Top of the lid it says Edison Bell Edisonia and at the
bottom London Record. So I assume the reference is to Edison products.

Ok, resident Edison nuts, I saw something a bit puzzling last night. We
had a speaker at our historical society talk about the 4 amusement parks
 in
East Providence RI. He used post card views mostly and on one of them of
Crescent Park, from the early 1900s, there was a building marked
 Edisonia.
I thought it might be for movies but cylinder phono exhibition is another
possibility. Anyone ever read/seen a description of an exhibit marked
Edisonia and what was in it?

 Thanks,

 Ron L

[Phono-L] Passing of John Davis

2007-09-18 Thread Jeffry Young, D.O.
I am privileged to own his Zonophone Grand Opera, bought from another
collector, and incomplete. It took me two years to complete, but it is
one of the prizes of my collection. Jerry, you saw this machine last
summer. I wish I could have known Mr. Davis.

My condolences,
Jeff

John was a very wonderful man who cared deeply for others. I have several
objects in my collection that I purchased from him. The nicest is a
beautiful Chinese painted paper machet horn for a cylinder machine. I
always think of John when I look at this horn.

[Phono-L] ARSC Research Grants Program 2008

2007-09-18 Thread Bill Klinger
The following message has been posted by the Outreach Committee of the
Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC). If you have any
questions, please click on the link or e-mail address below.

--- ARSC RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM ---
Deadline for receipt of applications: February 29, 2008

The ARSC Research Grants Program supports scholarship and publication in the
fields of sound recording research and audio preservation. (This program is
separate from the ARSC Preservation Grants Program, which encourages and
supports the preservation of historically significant sound recordings of
Western Art Music.) Project categories eligible for consideration include:
discography, bibliography, historical studies of the sound recording
industry and its products, and any other subject likely to increase the
public's understanding and appreciation of the lasting importance of
recorded sound. ARSC encourages applications from individuals whose research
forms part of an academic program at the master's or doctoral level.

ARSC members and non-members alike are eligible for grants in amounts up to
$1000. Grant funds can be used to underwrite clerical, editorial, and travel
expenses. Funds may not be used to purchase capital equipment or recordings,
to reimburse applicants for work already performed, or to support projects
that form part of a paid job. Grant recipients must submit documentation of
their expenses, and all grant funds must be disbursed within eighteen months
of the grant award.

Grant recipients are required to submit brief descriptions of their projects
for publication in the ARSC Journal, and are encouraged to submit articles
about their projects, for possible publication in the Journal.

Research Grant Applications shall include:
-- a summary of the project (one page maximum), with samples of the work, if
possible;
-- a budget covering the entire project, highlighting the expenses the ARSC
Grant will cover (one page maximum);
-- a curriculum vitae; and
-- an indication of the prospects for publication or other public
dissemination of the project results.

Grant awards will be announced at the annual business meeting of ARSC, after
having been approved at the spring meeting of the ARSC Board of Directors.

Send applications to: Richard Warren Jr., ARSC Grants Committee Chair,
Historical Sound Recordings, Yale University Library, P.O. Box 208240, New
Haven, CT 06520-8240, USA. Applications for the next grant cycle must be
received by February 29, 2008.
