Not entirley sure what you're trying to do but, if the '.box_header' and '.box_footer'
are css
classes, then it won't show up in people's text-only email.
if not then try removing the second periods '.'
so i tlooks like:
$body .= "box_header('test').";
$body .= "text";
$body .= "box_footer().";
