Well, I would look at 2 possible problems:
1). Submit is an HTML input type, and I would try to avoid using it as a
script variable just to make sure avoid confusion.
2). You may not have register_globals turn 'on' in your php.ini file.  So,
if the form method is POST, try: $_POST['submit'].  Or $_SERVER['submit']
