If you run a local DNS server, and have all computers in the school use
it as their DNS server (which is likely the scenerio) then you can
create local TLDs (top-level domains) as you please, as far as I know.

If you're running a local UNIX server, take a look at the BIND
documentation. If you run an NT server, look for the Microsoft DNS
documentation, or switch the NT box from MS DNS to BIND for NT.

Familiarize yourself with DNS domain setup... With an intranet, you can
do lots of things with DNS that you couldn't with the Internet.

Subject: [PHP-DB] Intranet Server

Hi all,

I'm not sure if I should ask this question in this group, but since I'm
using PHP in the process, I thought someone might be able to help me.
Anyways. I'm in charge of creating an intranet webzine for my school
and
I've been working on the server-side for a while. I want to know if
there
is anyway that I could map the IP of the server (internal IP on the
local
network) with a name like http://intranet/ and have sub ips like
http://math.intranet/. I tried reading about DNS, but it seems that it
only
works for internet addresses and involves registrations of a domain
name.
Has anyone done this before? If yes, what are the system requirements
and
is there anywhere that I can learn how to do it.

Thanks in advance,

Ali
