Same in Perl? I have not used Gettext in Perl, but I'd truly hope not
considering the overwhelming usage of $_. Can you imagine _ and $_? That's
not what I'd call increased readability.

Even C's gettext doesn't build this in by default, it requires the DEVELOPER
to consciously make that decision.

Heh, touche on my poor terminology. What I mean is it has no business being
a function brought to the table by PHP. Even if we moved it to PEAR in a
GetText module I'd be a happier guy. What good are ignored standards?

loses in this scenario. The small chunk who use gettext make
a one line change. Performance is not affected. Conventions are satisfied.
Everyone goes home happy. What's the problem?

At least can we create a reference? User wants to know what the hell _ is,
he goes to www.php.net/_ and gets an answer - of course that may be a
problem since _ is such a goofy url, most people will assume it doesn't
work. Another reason _ is bad! :)

I agree. I think this two pronged appoach is the best way to satisfy
everyone.
Let's do this alias thing, but lets also document _() for the sake of
those people that have never heard of gettext but need to maintain the
code.
