It's usually done with fsockopen();, and curl module functions for SSL servers. There are a few classes for each method, on the most tradicional snippets and clasess websites.
I enjoyed using one called Snoopy. Also the manual pages comments are very helpful (both on fsockopen(); related functions and curl module ones). -- Julio Nobrega.
