Well, I just figured out my own problem. The problem was these files didn't exist, and it couldn't create them the first time because I guess the script didn't have write access to the directory. I thought I checked for this possibility before by <touch>ing the file, but I must have forgotten to set write permissions to the 'other' group. Are there any pitfalls in setting the directory to write permissions for "other," or should I just create all of these files individually and set their write permissions atomically?
