Somewhere in the apache configuration file you will find something like
this...

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php4
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

To include the old .php3 extension make it

index.php3 to your DirectoryIndex directive:
DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.cgi index.php3 index.php ---
and so on.
In addition, .php3 should be added to your AddType directive
