The .zip distribution is for a manual install - i.e. you have to unzip and
configure everything yourself. You need to download the Windows 4.3.1
Installer version instead

FWIW the php.exe you double clicked on was the CGI/CLI
Yep...take a look at register_globals in the documentation--it's been
switched from on to off by default. That's what's causing your variables
not to show up.
