I read the next line in the manual to determine what the issue was - using windows I can only go back to 01 jan 1970. My bad, I should have read a little further. If anyone does have a nice little workaround for this for windows, though, I'd appreciate it. The date is coming out of a mysql database in a YYYY-MM-DD format.
