a while this did not work well

I'm wondering if functions listed as 'PHP4' means that they're supported in
all beta versions (as opposed to 'PHP 4 >= 4.0b4'), or is it only supported
in the final version and higher?
The problem is I'm stuck with a hosting service which is only running PHP
4.0b2.
