Guy I don't know how bad the negs are but before you fool around with chemical solutions you might want to try flashing as a printing technique to bring in the "unprintable" highlights. You can flash the whole sheet of paper or just flash the localized dense highlight area. I use this sometimes with backlight forest scenes etc. where the highlights and shadows are way to "far" apart.
