At my high school there was a kid who elected to use an old-fashioned 'David & Goliath Bible-style' sling...a leather piece with several feet of cord on either side...he'd throw snowballs with it and we all thought it was cool just to hear it whistle and wonder how far they would go.
Accidentally putting a snowball thru a study hall window, cutting a clean hole in the glass was both sobering and scary at the same time (see? - the story was related to pinhole) - nobody stuck around to see if there was an image projected on the wall -we all scattered to avoid getting caught.
