Upon uploading, I kept getting "check username and password" error messages
from merkaartor, although I definitely used the correct user credentials (I
even copy & pasted them). As a last resort I changed the password in
openstreetmap.org, abandoning german umlauts in favor of "normal"
characters - after which merkaartor was able to login.
merkaartor really should support umlauts/other "special" characters.

This issue has been fixed some time ago. merkaartor (0.18.1-3) from
unstable doesn't have any issues when I change my password to UmläutUmläut.
