You had better add some examples as to how to use the program.
$ file *
a.dbf: DBase 3 data file (366 records)
a.shp: ESRI Shapefile version 1000 length 198980 type Polygon
a.shx: ESRI Shapefile version 1000 length 1514 type Polygon
$ gdalinfo a.shp
ERROR 4: `a.shp' not recognised as a supported file format.
gdalinfo failed - unable to open 'a.shp'.

A shapefile is not a raster file, so cannot be managed by
gdalinfo. I do not understand the meaning of this report.
