It took me some time to figure out why the plugin would not appear in
the list of iceweasel's install plugin. It turns out libxpcom.so is
required but not installed :
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins # ldd libjavaplugin.so
lin
I've also got caught by this problem which causes ssh sessions to fail
to close and tomcat restart's to hang ant build scripts.
The problem seems to be in the Debian specific patch to jsvc which added
support for redirecting stdout/stderr output to syslog. That patch
doesn't close the parent proc

I had the same problem and installing xulrunner-dev also fixed it for me.
