man stderr shows:

Well it turns out ~/.java/deployment/deployment.properties gets
overwritten VERY often. So one must add that line back to it VERY often.
A Google search about this file turns up the usual confusing answers.
And I had dreams one could workaround this bug without being root.

Of course Java works on Linux. It just doesn't work on Debian.

How dumb of me for assuming it would work.
OK, I followed the workaround while this bug never gets fixed, and now
it works.
