Now, doing a complete
$ apt-get remove --purge network-manager
and
$ apt-get install network-manager-kde
"solves" the problem, as everything is working fine again here. However, I am
afraid that it will not be possible anymore to find out the reason for the
problem before.

Yes. I tried now with a fresh new user account. The problem still exists.
