We might later introduce a new sort of update-notifier package based on PackageKit for desktops other than GNOME 3 and not using Qt (that is, for which GNOME PackageKit and Apper do not work reasonably). You should remove kingston-update-notifier too, as it depends on update-notifier-common and has not seen an update since 2011.
