Unfortunately, the difference is that waf.mk sets LINKFLAGS. But
LDFLAGS works and is (as noted in the page linked by Jaromír) the
correct variable to specify. I suspect LINKFLAGS was used in older waf
(as scons does, I believe they share some ancestry).

BTW, I can't find the commit mail, but why did you add a build-dep on
hardening-wrapper?
Shouldn't we make the package do the hardening on its own? I think the
idea was to deprecate h-w at some point.
