If the addons.debian.net service provided non-free drumkits due to bogus 
metadata, that would be a bug in the service.

No, issue is that upstream mechanism to download addons include nonfree 
licensed addons.  As the title of the bugreport states.

You do indeed save disk space by imposing licensing rules, but that is 
not intended: I would very much appreciate us being able to fill the 
harddrives of our users with Hydrogen drumkits :-)

Aim of the bugfix is not to hide, but to address the bug.

I realize now that effectively I am also hiding knowledge about the 
upstream feed.  That was unintended!  I will add a README.Debian file 
documenting how Debian package deviates from upstream.


Full disclosure: I am hired by laptop maker Purism to help maintain 
their Debian derivative PureOS, which aims to achieve FSF endorsement 
and therefore at some places have aims not fully aligned with Debian 
aims.  FSF do arguably want to "hide" information about non-free stuff.

I choose to do most possibly of my work for Purism by improving Debian 
rather than forking from Debian - even though forking would be far 
easier, in part because I would then not need to defend my actions as I 
do now.

Right.  Documentation exist (as first hit when I searched for "hydrogen 
drumkits" without quotation marks in DuckDuckGo) about _other_ feeds, 
but I failed to notice that the default feed is assumed to be hardwired 
and therefore not mentioned at those places.  Which kinda makes sense.

I will improve the fix.

claimed to be Free licensed.

I am currently working on setting up a service addons.debian.net 
offering a automatically curated feed, subscribing to one or more 
upstream feeds and stripping non-free and unlicensed items.

At first I am implementing for Kodi - when that is in place I will 
implement for Hydrogen, and update the patch to point to that service 
instead of the current proper but indeed quite limited feed.

hmm, the drumkits aren't software per se.
i'm not saying that we shouldn't prefer free data.
but we don't patch our browsers to only access free webservers.

i concur that it is a bug for a free software to allow users to fetch
data from non-free sources.

i'm with you that we should offer free data as the forst choice.

there's a slight difference between "offer only free dumkits by default"
(which is the changelog entry for the patch) and "pretend that there are
only free drumkits".

users also have the freedom to just run 'apt-get source hydrogen; cd
hydrogen-*; sed -e '/^2001/d' -i debian/patches; dpkg-buildpackge

but in practice: how are they supposed to even know that there are
non-free sources available?

but afaict this is only a replacement for the freepats list; it doesn't
address the issue i'm having.

Hydrogen supports downloading additional drumkits.

The URL for a feed for such drumkits is configurable, and by default
points to a feed curated by the upstream authors of Hydrogen.

Unfortunately that feed contains both free and non-free drumkits.

This bug was fixed in 0.9.7-3 by patching the code to use an alternative
feed curated with the explicit scope of only freely licensed resources.
