Bug#603458: jack1: unowned files after purge (policy 6.8)

2010-11-14 Thread Holger Levsen
Package: jackd1
Version: 1:0.118+svn3796-7
Severity: important
User: debian...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: piuparts piuparts.d.o

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package left unowned files on the
system after purge, which is a violation of policy 6.8:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-removedetails

Also having a piuparts clean archive is formerly a release goal since lenny,
though properly cleaning up on purge is a quality character since longer.

From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...):

0m24.3s DEBUG: Command ok:
['chroot', '/org/piuparts.debian.org/tmp/tmp-IJmog', 'dpkg', '--remove',
'--pending']
0m24.5s DEBUG: No broken symlinks as far as we can find.
0m25.9s ERROR: FAIL: Package purging left files on system:
  /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf.disabled not owned

Maybe we should consider asking its removal from the Debian archive
 entirely.

Yes, the upstream's maintainer seems no longer active and popcon is 1.
Could you ask debian-release to drop it from squeeze?

Hi,

I've got a 17 monitor on a system without DVD drive, and a 12 monitor
on a laptop with DVD drive. This is a perfect situation to use VLC's
streaming properties -- viewing DVD movies on a larger monitor is so
much more comfortable, while I prefer not having to copy an entire DVD
image to the other system's hard disk.

However, since my LAN is only a 10Mbit one currently, streaming a DVD at
full quality simply isn't possible; it requires more bandwith than what
I have available. So, I selected the transcoding option in the VLC
interface. While experimenting with that option, I discovered that
scaling down the resolution of the stream while leaving the stream's
bitrate on maximum has a much higher impact on the required bandwith
than doing it the other way around, while the impact on quality is
negligable (so long as the scale isn't too high).

Unfortunately, something went wrong with subtitles; they just didn't
appear on the output. Only when I played a DVD that at one point had the
subtitles all on top did I find out what went wrong: these are simply
not scaled, they're still on the original scale. As a result, if the
stream is transcoded to a lower resolution, subtitles won't be visible.

Hello,

something is wrong with vlc's displaying of the tooltip windows. Those
things that appear if you leave your mouse cursor for 10 seconds on the
volume control bar. However, this tooltip makes me crazy. First, it does
no longer disappear. No matter how long the cursor is moved away from
the volume control. Second, it stays on top of ALL windows. That sucks,
there is no way to move that thing go away but terminate vlc. It appears
not to be WM dependent, and it seems to be not registered as a regular
window but just painted over the X framebuffer or so.

Here is a screen shot, to demonstrate the problem:

Version: 0.8.6-svn20061012.debian-5etch1
Severity: important

Hi,

vlc consistently segfaults when trying to transcode/stream from a v4l device
to an ogg(theora+vorbis) http (or whatever) stream.

Device:

:v4l-contrast=-1 :no-v4l-mjpeg :v4l-decimation=1 :v4l-quality=100

Transcoding:
:sout=#transcode{vcodec=theo,vb=384,scale=1,acodec=vorb,ab=96,channels=1}:duplicate{dst=std{access=http,mux=ogg,dst=10.0.3.97:8000}}

It looks a lot like an ancient vlc bug (Trac ticket #486).

The same bug exists in unstable, tested on both i386 and amd64.

Hi,

This is the first time I'm trying vlc, so I have no idea if older
versions have this problem too.

Everything I try to play with it sounds just horrible. It sounds like
it stops and start playing the music a few times per second or
something. But I have a feeling this only affects certain frequency
ranges.

I have this problem with all sources of music I've tried like ogg, mp3,
cdda, wav.

I don't have this problem with any other music player I've ever tried
like madplay, mplayer, rhythmbox, ogg123, ...

This is on an (old) amd64 system if that's relevant.

Yeah, the license is a bit weird, I don't know what its officially

The only difference is that the GOVERNMENT USE section is more verbose

Also, why do you use long-form debhelper?

Because I didn't see a way to do it with short-form. This library has
a very elaborate build system that I've tried for years to figure
out. Instead I've found the best way is to wrap it into something
more understandable, and long-form seemed the easiest way to do that.

I am open to changing it to short-form, but I don't see a clear way to
do it

I'm afraid I can't, the system with the affected setup is a production

 See http://www.sonicvisualiser.org/download.html

When someone wants a piece of software packaged for Debian, usually they
create a 'Request for Packaging' (RFP) to track the status/progress on
introducing it.

Indeed, such an RFP has been created for Sonic Visualizer:

  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=520230

It seems someone started on it, but ran into the fact that first a dependency
had to be packaged, 'rubberband'.

Looks like 'rubberband' has since been added, but work on sonic visualizer
hasn't continued yet. Might be good to add a note about that to the RFP.

Would you like to do the honours? Indeed it would be nice to have this in
Debian, it's a neat tool.

Re: Bits from the Debian Multimedia Maintainers

2010-11-14 Thread Stefano D'Angelo
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to gmane.linux.debian.devel.general as well.

Hi all,

This is my first post on this ml, so I start by introducing myself: my
name's Stefano and I am the lead developer behind NASPRO and I'm
pretty much involved with LV2 development.

Alessio Treglia suggested me to subscribe during a short IRC
conversion we had, after I offered to help with LV2. Unlickily, I'm
not a Debian (or derivative) user myself (yet the other guy who helps
me with NASPRO is), so I don't know how much I will be able to
actually contribute, yet I would be glad to give a hand when possible.

I'm replying to this post in particular since there's a little
inaccuracy in the description of NASPRO:

2010/11/13 Felipe Sateler fsate...@debian.org:
  * NASPRO: Convenient library to implement LV2 dynamic manifest
   plugins. It's available in Sid.

Well, that's actually the current version (0.2.0) of NASPRO core,
that's only one of the pieces. There's also the bridges (LADSPA and
DSSI to LV2) and the Permafrost compiler... but however I don't really
care. :-)

Coming to more relevant things, here we are developing a new version
of the whole thing from scratch and we would like to have it well
supported (i.e., packaged and easily available) on Debian (I mean, in
testing/Squeeze).

In our opinion, and according to our roadmap, it wouldn't really be
wise before the 0.2.93 version will be released (that should happen
around the beginning of March if everything goes well), since dynamic
manifest support, that is needed for the bridges to work, is not
properly implemented by current releases of any LV2 host/support
library yet.

In this regard, I ask you whether there is anything we should do to
make this happen.

However, for anything LV2-related, we are here. :-)

Best regards,

Stefano D'Angelo

I checked vlc 1.1.3-1 and 1.1.4-1. In both packages
(amd64) /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox/NEWS.gz is a real file and not a symlink.
Therefore this part of the bug is invalid.

Just noticed because the news submitted by apt-listchanges mentions
that file (though it contains a typo -- it says /usr/share/vlc-nox
 instead of /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox)

This typo will be fixed with the next upload.

The explanation is still valid. You have replaced your system
libavformat52 package with something newer than ffmpeg 0.5. This may be
either the package from experimental or from debian-multimedia.org. Both
will cause the symptom you are reporting.

My suggestion: Either upgrade to mplayer in experimental or revert to
ffmpeg libraries from squeeze.

Since there is nothing to fix, I'm closing this bug with this email.

Just noticed that /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox/NEWS.gz is a symlink to
../vlc-nox/NEWS.gz. There's no file to read.

Just noticed because the news submitted by apt-listchanges mentions
that file (though it contains a typo -- it says /usr/share/vlc-nox
instead of /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox)

Thanks

Bug#593735: vlc: don't exclusively depend on ttf-freefont

2010-11-14 Thread Benjamin Drung
Am Freitag, den 20.08.2010, 17:53 +0200 schrieb Dirk Griesbach:
vlc 1.1.3-1 does not depend on ttf-dejavu-core anymore but only on
ttf-freefont. It would be nice if I could choose, which fonts to use
because right now vlc is the only package which depends an ttf-freefont
for me. So something like depends (ttf-dejavu-core|ttf-freetype) would
 be really nice.

Sorry for the big response delay. We dropped our patch that changes the
default font from freefont to dejavu. Upstream uses a hard-coded default
font and put a copy of the default font in /usr/share/vlc/skins2/fonts/
(which we replace by symlinks). That's the reason why we have to depend
on ttf-freefont. Otherwise our symlinks will break.

I see no way for having alternative default fonts.

 Arnout

Hi Arnout,

Thanks for your note.

I was able to compile it on my old Debian machine, but first I had to
build bzip, rubberband, vamp, and installed the jack-sdk and some other
stuff. Finally, it compiled and it looks great...it starts with this
warning dialog box though:

No audio available

Could not open an audio device for playback.

Automatic audio device detection failed. Audio playback will not be
available during this session.

Any advice ? Can you point me to packaging instructions ?

The answer is: I don't know :)
But the COPYING file provided with the tarball and other sources say
GPL-2 and then, since distributing a tarball under the terms of the GPL
without a copyright notice is allowed, I thought examples were GPL-2
without copyright holder.

That is bogus, then: Only a license issued by the owner is valid.

What do you mean with distributing a tarball under the terms of the GPL
without a copyright notice is allowed? If you mean that apparently it
is allowed since it exist, then that is a bogus assumption: We obey the
DFSG while the rest of the world can choose to me more relaxed.

All of this is just my personal interpretation: Please run it by the
debian-legal@ mailinglist to get a more authoritative answer.

There is nothing broken about the longer URL.

Also, present tense is shorter than past tense.

So I suggest in commit messages / changelog entries to describe such
change as shorten, not fixed.

Better if described what was actually changed (and write in present
tense to make it shorter), like this:

Fix adjust watch file to track gzip (not bzip2) compressed tarballs.

Please commit changelog updates separately from code change: This makes
it easier to later revert or cherry-pick into other branches.

Or if not, then at least mention _all_ changes you did in the commit
messages, including your updating changelog (when being about more/other
