Bug#293857: marked as done (scaling when transcoding doesn't scale subtitles)

This is a perfect situation to use VLC's streaming properties -- viewing DVD movies on a larger monitor is so much more comfortable, while I prefer not having to copy an entire DVD image to the other system's hard disk. However, since my LAN is only a 10Mbit one currently, streaming a DVD at full quality simply isn't possible; it requires more bandwith than what I have available. So, I selected the transcoding option in the VLC interface. While experimenting with that option, I discovered that scaling down the resolution of the stream while leaving the stream's bitrate on maximum has a much higher impact on the required bandwith than doing it the other way around, while the impact on quality is negligable (so long as the scale isn't too high). Unfortunately, something went wrong with subtitles; they just didn't appear on the output. Only when I played a DVD that at one point had the subtitles all on top did I find out what went wrong: these are simply not scaled, they're still on the original scale. As a result, if the stream is transcoded to a lower resolution, subtitles won't be visible. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.10 Locale: lang=nl_be.iso-8859...@euro, lc_ctype=nl_be.iso-8859...@euro (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages vlc depends on: ii aalib1 1.4p5-22ascii art library ii dbus-1 0.23-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii liba52-0.7.4 0.7.4-1 Library for decoding ATSC A/52 str ii libc62.3.2.ds1-20GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdvbpsi3 0.1.4-2 library for MPEG TS and DVB PSI ta ii libdvdnav4 0.1.9-3 The DVD navigation library ii libdvdread3 0.9.4-5 Simple foundation for reading DVDs ii libflac6 1.1.1-5 Free Lossless Audio Codec - runtim ii libfreetype6 2.1.7-2.3 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libfribidi0 0.10.4-6Free Implementation of the Unicode ii libgcc1 1:3.4.3-7 GCC support library ii libgnutls11 1.0.16-13 GNU TLS library - runtime library ii libhal0 0.4.7-1 Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libid3tag0 0.15.1b-3 ID3 tag reading library from the M ii liblircclient0 0.7.1pre1-1 LIRC client library ii libmad0 0.15.1b-1 MPEG audio decoder library ii libmodplug0 1:0.7-4 shared libraries for mod music bas ii libmpeg2-4 0.4.0b-2MPEG1 and MPEG2 video decoder libr ii libncurses5 5.4-4 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libogg0 1.1.0-1 Ogg Bitstream Library ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-1 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.5-8 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libtar 1.2.11-2C library for manipulating tar arc ii libtheora0 0.0.0.alpha3-1 The Theora Video Compression Codec ii libvorbis0a 1.0.1-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libvorbisenc21.0.1-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxml2 2.6.11-5GNOME XML library ii libxosd2 2.2.14-1X On-Screen Display library - runt ii libxv1 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10 X Window System video extension li ii slang1 1.4.9dbs-8 The S-Lang programming library - r ii ttf-freefont 20031008-1.1Freefont Serif, Sans and Mono True ii wxvlc

Re: Bits from the Debian Multimedia Maintainers
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article that has been posted to gmane.linux.debian.devel.general as well. Hi all, This is my first post on this ml, so I start by introducing myself: my name's Stefano and I am the lead developer behind NASPRO and I'm pretty much involved with LV2 development. Alessio Treglia suggested me to subscribe during a short IRC conversion we had, after I offered to help with LV2. Unlickily, I'm not a Debian (or derivative) user myself (yet the other guy who helps me with NASPRO is), so I don't know how much I will be able to actually contribute, yet I would be glad to give a hand when possible. I'm replying to this post in particular since there's a little inaccuracy in the description of NASPRO: 2010/11/13 Felipe Sateler fsate...@debian.org: * NASPRO: Convenient library to implement LV2 dynamic manifest plugins. It's available in Sid. Well, that's actually the current version (0.2.0) of NASPRO core, that's only one of the pieces. There's also the bridges (LADSPA and DSSI to LV2) and the Permafrost compiler... but however I don't really care. :-) Coming to more relevant things, here we are developing a new version of the whole thing from scratch and we would like to have it well supported (i.e., packaged and easily available) on Debian (I mean, in testing/Squeeze). In our opinion, and according to our roadmap, it wouldn't really be wise before the 0.2.93 version will be released (that should happen around the beginning of March if everything goes well), since dynamic manifest support, that is needed for the bridges to work, is not properly implemented by current releases of any LV2 host/support library yet. In this regard, I ask you whether there is anything we should do to make this happen. However, for anything LV2-related, we are here. :-) Best regards, Stefano D'Angelo ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers

Bug#599314: files in /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox are symlinks to themselves
Am Mittwoch, den 06.10.2010, 11:50 -0400 schrieb Alvaro Herrera: Just noticed that /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox/NEWS.gz is a symlink to ../vlc-nox/NEWS.gz. There's no file to read. I checked vlc 1.1.3-1 and 1.1.4-1. In both packages (amd64) /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox/NEWS.gz is a real file and not a symlink. Therefore this part of the bug is invalid. Just noticed because the news submitted by apt-listchanges mentions that file (though it contains a typo -- it says /usr/share/vlc-nox instead of /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox) This typo will be fixed with the next upload. -- Benjamin Drung Ubuntu Developer (www.ubuntu.com) | Debian Maintainer (www.debian.org) signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers

Bug#593735: vlc: don't exclusively depend on ttf-freefont
Am Freitag, den 20.08.2010, 17:53 +0200 schrieb Dirk Griesbach: vlc 1.1.3-1 does not depend on ttf-dejavu-core anymore but only on ttf-freefont. It would be nice if I could choose, which fonts to use because right now vlc is the only package which depends an ttf-freefont for me. So something like depends (ttf-dejavu-core|ttf-freetype) would be really nice. Sorry for the big response delay. We dropped our patch that changes the default font from freefont to dejavu. Upstream uses a hard-coded default font and put a copy of the default font in /usr/share/vlc/skins2/fonts/ (which we replace by symlinks). That's the reason why we have to depend on ttf-freefont. Otherwise our symlinks will break. I see no way for having alternative default fonts. -- Benjamin Drung Ubuntu Developer (www.ubuntu.com) | Debian Maintainer (www.debian.org) signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers

See http://www.sonicvisualiser.org/download.html When someone wants a piece of software packaged for Debian, usually they create a 'Request for Packaging' (RFP) to track the status/progress on introducing it. Indeed, such an RFP has been created for Sonic Visualizer: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=520230 It seems someone started on it, but ran into the fact that first a dependency had to be packaged, 'rubberband'. Looks like 'rubberband' has since been added, but work on sonic visualizer hasn't continued yet. Might be good to add a note about that to the RFP. Would you like to do the honours? Indeed it would be nice to have this in Debian, it's a neat tool. Arnout Hi Arnout, Thanks for your note. I was able to compile it on my old Debian machine, but first I had to build bzip, rubberband, vamp, and installed the jack-sdk and some other stuff. Finally, it compiled and it looks great...it starts with this warning dialog box though: No audio available Could not open an audio device for playback. Automatic audio device detection failed. Audio playback will not be available during this session. Any advice ? Can you point me to packaging instructions ? ___ pkg-multimedia-maintainers mailing list pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/pkg-multimedia-maintainers

That is bogus, then: Only a license issued by the owner is valid. What do you mean with distributing a tarball under the terms of the GPL without a copyright notice is allowed? If you mean that apparently it is allowed since it exist, then that is a bogus assumption: We obey the DFSG while the rest of the world can choose to me more relaxed.
