Okay, this is an interoperability issue then. Let's mark them
 appropriately.

And some extra details: playing with mplayer on the command line is
fine. Only when playing with smplayer is that I had problems.

Thanks for confirming that this is a smplayer problem. I'm therefore
reassinging this bug.

Maybe this problem is related to the libav 0.7 transition, since it only
  showed up recently.

FWIW, the problem might be related to mplayer, because…

  ii mplayer 2:1.0~rc4.dfsg1+svn33713-2

…it went away after I replaced mplayer with mplayer2.

Just as an extra data point, I have *exactly* the same problem, with exactly
the same symptom and changing to mplayer2 also works around the problem with
smplayer.

Unfortunately, installing mplayer2 forces the uninstallation of mplayer,
which makes gecko-mediaplayer also be uninstalled, but that's another
matter.

Can you please file a bug on gecko-mediaplayer to change its
dependencies to allow it to work with mplayer2? Thanks.

Does this also occur with mplayer2, i.e. is this specific to mplayer?

Also, what happens if you playback with /usr/bin/mplayer directly, i.e.,
without using mplayer2?
