The .desktop file for VLC has the command Exec=vlc %U. This causes
problems when loading files with spaces in their names.
I suggest it be changed to Exec=vlc %F.
That would results in VLC not being proposed to open URLs.
I wonder if something like Exec=vlc '%U' would work
