I believe I have tried that without success. Unless you have some specific
hints.

Does it happen only with that file or any video?

I have download another video from Youtube, it's the same.

In any case, please attach vlc -vvv of a crashing run and I guess we'd also need
the X server log. Please also tell us more about your hardware and if you use
any propriety drivers.

Attaching vlc -vvv output, and Xorg.0.log

It's a laptop with i7-4710HQ and GeForce GTX 860M (hybrid graphics).

And yes, I use proprietary nvidia-driver package. Desktop runs on Intel, and
that
bumblebee should take care of discrete card.

Actually, when you asked about drivers, I remember there was quite recent
nvidia-driver
upgrade for my Testing machine, maybe it broke something?

A quick internet search suggests that is caused by old sessions and cleaning
them should help getting rid of this error.

In any case, please attach vlc -vvv of a crashing run and I guess we'd also need
the X server log. Please also tell us more about your hardware and if you use
any propriety drivers.

Bug#878923: vlc: starting video crashes KDE session

2017-10-17 Thread Vincas Dargis
Package: src:vlc
Version: 2.2.6-6
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

Probably after some recent package upgrades, I cannot launch video with VLC as
it
crashes whoe X session:

LANG=en_US vlc ~/Parsiuntimai/David\ Stone\ Exceptional\ Performance_48_20.mp4
VLC media player 2.2.6 Umbrella (revision 2.2.6-0-g1aae78981c)
[5591942d8538] [http] lua interface: Lua HTTP interface
[5591941d3258] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use
'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Qt: Session management error: Could not open network socket
libva info: VA-API version 0.40.0
The X11 connection broke: I/O error (code 1)
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
after 11 requests (11 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
QObject::~QObject: Timers cannot be stopped from another thread

What I get is login prompt as if manually log-outed/rebooted.

If I launch VLC without specifying (or clicking on) video file, it displays
it's GUI
without a crash.

Meanwhile, Dragon player works fine.

That video is downloaded form Youtube using Download Helper, with title visible
in mentioned copy-paste.
