The problem: I changed from wicd to network-manager, as wicd is no more further developed. As network-manager is telling in its documentation, it can also use /etc/network/interfaces, for this is what I prefer. I do not always use/need a windowmanager. But it appears, that the wireless interface cannot be configured during boot, when network-manager is installed. When I am starting my windowmanager (in my case it is KDE with plasma-network-widget-kde installed) network-manager does not show the wlan interface. ifconfig is telling me, it is existent, but got no IP (although an IP is configured in /etc/network/interfaces for that interface) Then I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart in a terminal window and I get: * Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not re-enable some interfaces * Reconfiguring network interfaces... wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1 RTNETLINK answers: File exists Failed to bring up eth0. Cannot find device usb0 Failed to bring up usb0. -- After doing this command, network-manager got the wlan interface, too. Note: This command is working without error, when network-manager is NOT running. In that case, everything is working well. (Doing rmmod ath9k and modprobe ath9k did the trick, too) I also tried NOT to comment out the configuration of /etc/network/interfaces for wlan0. In this case, wlan0 is getting no IP at boot, but is seen in network-manager. However, network-manager is configured, to automatically connect to a given accesspoint, but that also does NOT work! Connecting manually is working well. Please note also, the identical configuration is working on my other notebook very well! The only difference is the wlan hardware. Whilst the working one is 64-bit and got an Atheros AR5*** (with ath5k driver), the 32-bit one got an Atheros AR9*** (which uses ath9k) driver. However, IMO this should not make the difference. Last info: I tried to purge and reinstall network-manager and wpasupplicant, but no success. It would be nice, if you could take a look at it, I can live with my workaround for some time, but fixing would be nice. Thanks for any help. [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#755202: network-manager: keeps creating and using new connection eth0 that does not work
Talked to upstream about this problem. Attached is the IRC log. -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth? mbiebl dcbw: this bug report is a mess: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755202 mbiebl do you have any idea what this could be about? dcbw mbiebl: what creates eth0:avahi? dcbw mbiebl: and why does it not just add the address as a secondary... dcbw mbiebl: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755202#136 looks like an accurate description of the problem dcbw mbiebl: something is assigning an address to the interface before NM starts up (possibly the kernel with IPv6LL) and NM respects that configuration on boot dcbw mbiebl: it will name that generated+assumed connection the same as the interface name, so I guess everyone on the bug isn't using systemd/udev network renaming becuase they all talk about 'eth0' mbiebl dcbw: the new udev persistent network interface naming is opt-in in Debian mbiebl eth0:avahi is a link-local fallback created by avahi-autopid mbiebl if e.g. dhclient times out mbiebl dcbw: but I have no idea really what's going on there dcbw mbiebl: the question is, why is it using address labels and not just adding it to the interface, but that's not your problem dcbw mbiebl: I think that #136 is the basic issue dcbw mbiebl: the eth0 things are in-memory connections generated from the existing interface state when NM starts, so that it doesn't disrupt the existing interface configuration dcbw mbiebl: and it won't work, because it's link-local so you don't get anywhere mbiebl apparently this is not debian specific mbiebl but I wasn't able yet, to distill the exact reproducer dcbw no, it's not debian specific dcbw mbiebl: it will only occur if (a) something brings the interface up before NetworkManager starts, and (b) the kernel has had enough time to run DAD on the IPv6LL address that it adds because the interface is IFF_UP already dcbw mbiebl: a reproducer would be something like dcbw 1) stop NM dcbw 2) ip addr flush all dcbw 3) ifconfig eth0 down dcbw 4) ifconfig eth0 up dcbw 5) wait until the kernel has assigned an IPv6LL address dcbw 6) start NetworkManager dcbw and you'll see NM assume the connection on eth0 that is ipv4.method=disabled, ipv6.method=link-local dcbw that's essentially intended but sub-optimal behavior, as a side-effect of NM attempting not to touch already configured interfacs mbiebl so if the user has a valid connection config for eth0 this is not applied? dcbw in the case of IPv6LL-only, it's less than helpful dcbw mbiebl: existing interface configuration trumps *all*, because if the configuration already exists on the interface, something put it there, and NM tries not to interfere dcbw mbiebl: int he case of IPv6LL, well, that is usually not intended by the user dcbw so we probably do want to adjust NM behavior in the IPv6LL-only case mbiebl same for an avahi created IPv4LL dcbw well, that's intended because somebody installed the dhclient script or whatever dcbw plus, avahi-autoipd is going do to die pretty soon, according to upstream dcbw I have no idea why that avahi behavior is useful mbiebl will that be folded into networkd? dcbw there's already replacement code in networkd, and NM does IPv4LL itself too, and so does connman dcbw so basically, since it's a network management daemon task and not really a standalone thing, I guess they decided it should be done in management daemons mbiebl yeah, it was probably just useful for basic tools like ifupdown mbiebl (it's hooked into it via if-up.d hooks and a dhclient hook) dcbw mbiebl: for the IPv4LL side of things, if the user wants IPv4LL, then they can (a) create a config in NM for it that they can use when they want, and/or (b) we can explore ways to achieve whatever behavior they want within NM, like potential fallback to IPv4LL when DHCP fails or whatever dcbw mbiebl: so two results from that thread; #1 NM's IPv6LL-only assume behavior should be changed, and #2 avahi-autoipd probably shouldn't be called from the hooks to add an address dcbw at least when NM is being used... mbiebl oh, I still have an avahi-autoipd suggests in the NM package mbiebl probably from old times... mbiebl suggests don't pull in the package automatically thankfully dcbw mbiebl: well, complicated dcbw mbiebl: it's required currently for NM's IPv4LL behavior, but NM spawns it manually dcbw mbiebl: we're going to remove that dependency soon thouh mbiebl or, well, it actually still has code for IPv4LL using avahi dcbw mbiebl: so you would still want avahi-autoipd, but you don't want the hooks running when NM is running dcbw at least the ones that add addresses mbiebl the if-up.d hooks (which are called by the NM dispatcher) mbiebl only add routes mbiebl it's the dhclient hook, which adds the avahi interface mbiebl since we don't call the dhclient hook scripts mbiebl this probably only happens if the user manages

Your message dated Tue, 31 Mar 2015 18:48:45 + with message-id e1yd1dr-0001r0...@franck.debian.org and subject line Bug#780004: fixed in udisks2 2.1.5-2 has caused the Debian Bug report #780004, regarding udisks2: rules for devices on this seat / other seat interact poorly with dbus-user-session to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 780004: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=780004 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems ---BeginMessage--- Package: udisks2 Version: 2.1.3-5 Severity: normal Tags: upstream udisks2's logic for whether I may do something to a device looks like this pseudocode: let requesting_seat = requesting process - session - seat let device_seat = device - seat if (device_seat requesting_seat requesting_seat == device_seat) { use a polkit rule like org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount (by default, requires either an active session or admin authentication) } else { use a polkit rule like org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-other-seat (by default, requires admin authentication regardless) } This works poorly with the user session model used by dbus-user-session, which the systemd/kdbus developers intend to be the only model supported with kdbus. In that model, shared per-user services like gvfs and gnome-terminal exist outside any particular login session, and are not associated with a seat; the practical result is that while using dbus-user-session, I always need to enter my password to mount a disk, because gvfs' udisks backend is a child process of my `systemd --user` rather than part of my GUI session. One possibility for fixing this would be to change the pseudocode to this: let device_seat = device-seat if (device_seat) { for session in requesting uid's active sessions { if session-seat session-seat == device_seat { use a polkit rule like org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount return } } } use a polkit rule like org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-other-seat with the justification that different sessions with the same uid do not really represent a security boundary. There is a bit of a subtlety here with active vs. inactive sessions: if you have fast user switching on seat0, and this situation: seat0 \- active (tty7): alice \- inactive (tty8): bob seat1 or ssh session \- active: bob then bob should not be able to manipulate seat0 devices (without admin authentication) until alice finishes using seat0 and returns to bob's (locked) session. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 779756: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=779756 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems ---BeginMessage--- Source: policykit-1 Version: 0.105-8 Severity: normal User: pkg-systemd-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org Usertags: libsystemd Hi! In systemd v209, released over a year ago, the various libsystemd-* libraries (libsystemd-journal.so, libsystemd-login.so, libsystem-daemon.so, libsystemd-id128.so) were merged into a single libsystemd.so library to reduce code duplication and avoid cyclic dependencies [1]. Your package declares a build-dependency on either libsystemd-daemon-dev, libsystemd-login-dev or libsystemd-journal-dev. Please update your package so it can be built against libsystemd. Updating the configure check / build system === If your package use pkg-config and autotools, a typical configure check looks like: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) All you need to do, is change that to PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd) If there are checks for libsystemd-journal, libsystemd-login and libsystemd-journal, you can merge that into a single check: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAR, libsystemd-daemon) PKG_CHECK_MODULES(BAZ, libsystemd-journal) = PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd) BAR_{CFLAGS,LIBS} and BAZ_{CFLAGS,LIBS} need to be updated accordingly. If you/upstream wants to support building against older versions of systemd, you can update the configure check as follows: PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login) = PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd,, [PKG_CHECK_MODULES(FOO, libsystemd-login)]) See [2] as an example how to do that. Updating Build-Depends == Please replace the Build-Depends on libsystemd-*-dev with libsystemd-dev [3]. I would recommend against adding alternative Build-Depends against the old dev packages. This is not necessary, since libsystemd-dev is already provided in jessie. Backports = Debian jessie already ships with libsystemd-dev, so this change is safe regarding backports. Upstream Please consider forwarding this upstream. In some cases upstream might already have a fix for that Thanks for considering. Michael, on behalf of the pkg-systemd team. [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#781634: upower: Power incorrectly reported as 0% after hibernate (leads to re-hibernate if on battery power)
Package: upower Version: 0.99.1-3.1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, Using cinnamon desktop, I can hibernate and resume from hibernation with no trouble if plugged-in. It does not need to remain plugged-in between, I believe, it just needs to be plugged-in when rebooted to resume. If the computer is unplugged when resuming from hibernation, then it claims that the battery is completely discharged (0%) including showing a popup (both probably being cinnamon-specific, but presumably from upower infrastructure) and proceeds to automatically hibernate. I do not believe this is a hardware issue since I have tested this from a near-full-charged state and it reports uniquely 0%, and works fine if plugged in when resuming, as above. I have experimented with 'upower -m', and this causes the unplugged resume- from-hibernate to not automatically re-hibernate, but the battery does indicate as being at 0%. Upon inserting the power, the number jumps to the 'real' number, eg. 98%. I am happy to run more tests; please let me know if I can help any further. This quite limits the portability of my laptop, as I am tethered to a socket if I want to be able to resume from hibernation - and need to 'look ahead' as I'm not currently aware of how to avoid resuming instead of rebooting, and obviously unsaved work may be 'locked away' in the repeatedly re-hibernating machine. -- Neil -- System Information: Debian Release: 8.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages upower depends on: ii dbus 1.8.16-1 ii libc6 2.19-15 ii libdbus-1-31.8.16-1 ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.102-1 ii libglib2.0-0 2.42.1-1 ii libgudev-1.0-0 215-12 ii libimobiledevice4 1.1.6+dfsg-3.1 ii libplist2 1.11-3 ii libupower-glib30.99.1-3.1 ii libusb-1.0-0 2:1.0.19-1 ii udev 215-12 Versions of packages upower recommends: ii policykit-1 0.105-8 upower suggests no packages. -- no debconf information ___ Pkg-utopia-maintainers mailing list Pkg-utopia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-utopia-maintainers
