Hi Simon,

I'm dropping debian-mentors@d.o from the recipients list as I think it
the discussion is not relevant for that list anymore.

Will do, thanks. I thought I added all maintainers individual addresses
at some point in the discussion, but probably I didn't...

I have the package ready, and it works fine without any diversion,
alternatives or other trickery. It has been surprisingly easy, indeed.
You can get the package here:

https://salsa.debian.org/dnn-guest/dbus-broker

It works fine minus replacing dbus-deamon for the user bus, which
prompted the email at the origin of this thread. It needs to be done
manually (see README.Debian) or installing a

/etc/systemd/user/dbus.service

symlink. I don't know what's the best strategy, yet.

I'm happy to work with the dbus maintainers to fix any issue.

Incidentally, I will be looking for a sponsor to upload the package to
unstable as soon as I figure out how to solve the above minor issue. It
would be great if someone among the dbus maintainers could act as sponsor.

That would need to be investigated indeed. So far the package works
well on a couple of very minimal installs I tried it on.

Thanks! Cheers,
Dan

Sorry, I didn't see that conversation until now. Please use the role address
@packages.debian.org if you want to reach package maintainers:
mailing lists used to represent team maintenance often don't have
the entire team subscribed, particularly if the team maintains many
not-entirely-related packages (as pkg-utopia does), because the list
receives all the "messages to the maintainer" for every package that it
maintains, making it inconveniently high-traffic.

If dbus-broker is uploaded to Debian as an optional dbus-daemon
replacement, it will definitely need to be coordinated with the dbus
source package. Having the two packages coexist is probably not going to
be straightforward to set up, and if any diversions, alternatives etc.
are going on, all maintainers of the dbus package will need to be aware
of them.

I do not expect that dbus-broker will be compatible with every D-Bus
service in Debian. The one incompatibility that I'm reasonably sure exists
is that if the Exec= for an activatable service points to a command that
will fork (background itself) and exit 0, dbus-daemon tolerates this
(at the cost of worse error behaviour because it cannot tell whether
the service subsequently fails), while dbus-broker almost certainly does
not. This is inadvisable behaviour even with the reference dbus-daemon,
so I'd consider it to be a bug in the service, but unfortunately it can't
be detected statically.

It's unfortunate that current Debian infrastructure conflates the
concepts of "should receive every communication about all of these
packages" and "is a team": hopefully current/near-future work being done
on tracker.debian.org will address that.

[Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#880169: Please enable Indicator support and build against Ayatana Indicators

Dear maintainer,

attached you find a .debdiff that enables Indicator support in Network
Manager Applet (GNOME) on Debian.

The Debian + Ubuntu MATE Packaging Team are currently working on porting
Ubuntu Indicators to a distro-independent state. This is done under a new
upstream umbrella (https://github.com/AyatanaIndicators).

For Network Manager Applet (GNOME), we would love to see Indicator
support being enabled on Debian systems. As the Ubuntu Indicators in
Debian are severely unmaintained, please switch to Ayatana Indicators
when enabling Indicator support for your package.

A Network Manager Applet that has been built against Ayatana Indicators will
also work as-is on top of Ubuntu Indicators as found in Ubuntu.

Would you consider forwarding this request upstream?
I don't really want to maintain this as a downstream patch.

Sure, I can do that. In fact, my bug report has two parts: enable
AppIndicator support and switch over from Ubuntu AppIndicator to
Ayatana AppIndicator.

Don't expect any more work on that before the 16th Apr, I am currently
on garden VAC.

Applications that support AppIndicator / SNI will enhance multiple
desktops: Kde5, Gnome (with extension), Budgie, MATE, Xfce. LXQt is
currently looking into SNI support, too.

So, application indicators are more commonly spread than system
indicators. Network Manager Applet is in the realm of applicatipn
indicators.

The system indicators (sound, session, datetime, keyboard, etc.) can
enhance MATE, XFCE and Budgie for now. LXQt people are looking into
that, too, afaih. Unity7 can't work without system indicators. The
people from UBports (Unity8) also rely on system indicators. In
Unity8, a switch to Ayatana Indicators is under investigation.

That aside, which desktops in Debian would benefit from Ayatana
Indicators support?

Answered above...

Regards,
Michael

Dear Maintainer,

I just updated network-manager-gnome to find that nm-applet no longer worked.
After searching around for quite a long time, I found that I now need to be a
member of netdev to use nm-applet, which wasn't the case before (my upgrade was
from 0.9.8.4-1 to 0.9.8.8-1).
While this is documented in the README, which is laudable, I assume it will
still screw over many people when they upgrade.

Maybe it has to be this way. I'm just letting you know.

Attempting to dpkg-reconfigure network-manager-gnome and libnma0 had no effect.

Downgrading network-manager-gnome and libnma0 to 1.4.6-1 via `dpkg -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/network-manager-gnome_1.4.6-1_amd64.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/libnma0_1.4.6-1_amd64.deb`, and restarting nm-applet,
immediately restored the ability to connect to the network.

I've only been able to test on a single WPA network.

Is this still an issue on an up-to-date stretch or sid system?

Keep in mind, that in stretch, nm-applet does not start under gnome
classic by design. It's only supposed to start in gnome fallback.

Is this still an issue on an up-to-date stretch or sid system?
If so, what tray application do you use?

Would you consider forwarding this request upstream?
I don't really want to maintain this as a downstream patch.

That aside, which desktops in Debian would benefit from Ayatana
Indicators support?

TTBOMK, appindicator is no longer actively maintained (by Ubuntu) and
also unmaintained in Debian.
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=818019

I'm thus very reluctant to enable support for it.

Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.9.4.1-1+b1
Severity: normal

I recorded a screencast that shows how the bug occurs:

http://lindi.iki.fi/lindi/screencast/network-manager-gnome-fixing-APN-not-possible-after-mistake.webm

Steps to reproduce:
1) setup usb 3G modem and use it
2) go to "Options..." of the broadband connection and change the APN to
   something invalid.
3) unplug and replug the modem
4) Try to go to the "Options..." to fix the APN.

Expected results:
4) The "Options..." dialog can be accessed and the mistake made by the
user in step 2) can be corrected.

Actual results:
4) The "Options..." dialog is grayed out. The user is helpless and the
only way to fix the situation seems to be to edit /etc/ from command
   line.

This seems to have been a gnome-control-center issue which is supposed
to be fixed since version 3.6. Thus closing this bug report.

Package: network-manager-gnome
Version: 0.6.6-2
Severity: minor

n-m-g should provide an option to disable integration with the GNOME keyring,
since some users (myself included) prefer to manually
store their passwords and network credentials in a third-party password manager.

Thanks,
N.D.

Package: network-manager
Version: 1.1.91-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I want to configure a wireless connection provided by
my institution --- meaning that I have no degrees of freedom
in what I have to do to complete the procedure.

That said, the institution gives me two files, a CA certificate

  ca.pem

and a private key file with an associated private key

  wifiCert.p12

I had placed those files in a generic subfolder (~/Documents/.certificates)
and then I tried to configure the connection using Network Manager.

I access the Network Connections window, I Add a new (wireless)
connection, in the Editing New Connection window I access the Wi-Fi
Security tab, select WPA & WPA2 Enterprise from the Security menu, I use
the CA Certificate menu to access the ~/Documents/.certificates folder,
I'm shown the ca.pem file, I select it and proceed, using the Private key
menu, I access ~/Documents/.certificates, at the bottom I see the list of
correct file extensions (comprising the .p12 extension!) but the file
wifiCert.p12 is not shown (no file at all is shown as selectable).

At his point I cannot complete the configuration.

I have to mention that this is a new laptop (my previuos laptop
has been stolen) and that on my previous laptop I configured the same
wireless network w/o any problem. Previous laptop, btw, was running sid as well.

thank you in advance,
  gb
