This really sounds like backlight hardware wearing out. An easy way to
verify if it's got anything to do with software would be to reboot into
your BIOS config screen and see if it still happens there.

If it makes you feel any better, the backlight hardware on the T400 is FRUs
to the point that you can convert from CFL to LED if you really want to.
Hopfully for your sake the X200 is the same.
