Just my 2ยข. Shop first for speed, it's both the thing that costs and the thing
that will make your computer last IMHO.
I paid the Windows tax and the spinning ferrous disk tax and got an ASUS X540L
for ~$350. If I did it again I'd get a better screen, it's fairly low
resolution.

Having said that I've had all sorts of problems (not related to redo) getting
partitioning tables to match exactly and 4k sector alignment, etc...
I'm guessing your going to have to get down and dirty with fdisk / gparted.
