I would suggest the Lubuntu 14.04 distro with the Linux XP theme. Nicely
lightweight for older hardware and familiar looking, yet easy support from
multiple online sources.

Since there seems to be more support for Ubuntu flavors around these
parts, I would suggest the Lubuntu 14.04 distro with the XP theme

I should have mentioned that I've done that and it runs with output to the
virtual console. Just did so now; ran fine.
